Ten rules for being well-dressed: to follow, or to flout?

    Friday afternoon froth.

This piece discusses the (alleged) ten rules in question: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24019737

For ease of reference, the 'rules' are as follows:

    1. Don't do denim with denim

    2. Men shouldn't wear white socks

    3. Legs or cleavage - never both

    4. Vertical stripes are slimming

    5. The tip of a tie should always cover the last button of a shirt but never go below your belt

    6. Never mix patterns

    7. Straight men should only pierce their left ear

    8. Shoes and bags/shoes and belts should always match

    9. Blue and green should never be seen

    10. Never mix gold and silver jewellery

For what it's worth, of the ones that are relevant to me, I follow 2, 5 and 6
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I can be seen in a fairly lurid set in the audience on a certain Tennstedt Mahler DVD

But no - not for 20 years or more...

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

... And does that also apply to nipple piercing??!! I merely ask

              Can I add:

5b. The tie-knot is best not over-tightened (unless your the POW) and should be firm up to the collar with the top button never visible.

5c. Trousers should never bunch on the shoe. Possibly breaking a little on the shoe, no more. A bespoke tailor would always taper the end of the trouser leg so it would hang right for the front and the back of the shoe.

              6. Oh god, yes. To see say a tartan patterned tie with a striped shirt. What are they thinking.

              8b. Never brown in town

8c. ... and never brown shoes with a suit. Possitively makes me shiver. Nor, grey shows with a grey suit.

                .
... as Arnold Bennett's tailor said : "Trousers should shiver on the shoe but not break... "

Bless you for that, Vinteuil. That's a great quote which eptiomises the requirement very nicely.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Most of those refer to men, but my answers are:
                          1. I never wear denim
                          3. I believe less is more
                          4. I only possess horizontal stripes so I don't know
                          6. Nonsense
                          8. Ditto
                          9. I am wearing a striped teal and RAF blue top
                          10. Agreed, (but I only ever wear silver on the rare occasions I wear jewellery)

                            11. Don't use your trouser turn ups as an ash tray.....
