Several programmes on TV and Radio about the New Birmingham Library....it sounds an exciting, with performance space as well as paper and digital etc....Are any of our posters likely to be able to use it?....I wish it was near to me....

It sounds an amazing place, eighth - thanks for making me aware of it
The £189m Library of Birmingham, which houses one million books, is officially opened by Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl shot by the Taliban.
Coincidentally (or not) Michael Rosen has made two programmes for BBC Radio 4 about the future of libraries in Britain, well worth a listen, and the second one, broadcast this morning, is about the Birmingham project.

There was an excellent programme on it last night on BBC2 at 10 pm - the Culture Show (which I hardly ever watch but made an exception in this case). The programme not only covered the development of the library with a tour inside but looked at various other 'superlibraries' as well as a brief history of the public library and discussions about the merits of the new Birmingham one - and its predecessor. It does look curious on the outside - I can't get away from an impression of the building being covered in barbed wire - but fantastic inside. Michael Rosen made a fair point that whatever his support for the idea of the huge library it should not detract from the importance of the small local library, many of which are now under threat.
I make periodic trips to Birmingham which I much prefer visiting to London. I shall certainly try to take in a visit to the new library as well as a concert at Symphony Hall on my next trip.

The opening events were (I am reliably told) great
what is more than a little sad is that the "old" library was never built as planned and now , what is an iconic modernist building is going to be torn down
I'm not that keen on the look of the new one , which looks like someone has got a bit carried away with K-nex BUT the spaces are (apparently) really wonderful...... so probably better to be inside it than out ?

I'm off to Brum soon on a super-bargain 50p return to Moor Street from Marylebone (mind you we leave at 08:15 ) and I'll certainly try to fit in a visit
