    Ian Skelly

I like it when he reads the news because I play this little game of catching approving and disapproving inflections in his voice, which I take - however fanciful they may be - as indications of the BBC's wider North London Libby-Lefty bias. Try it, it is almost fun. For example when reading any story featuring George Osborne he seems to have this tiny little disapproving catch in his voice at the end of the item, which seems to be saying 'oh, how lowering/dreadful man/and the band played believe it if you like'.

A tiny strain of enthusiasm or agreement appears to my ears to be discernible when an item that appears to corroborate some preoccupation of the BBC/Labour Party: anti-cuts, anti-welfare reform, pro climate change.

Needless to say I think Mr Skelly a skillful newsreader and this is all very probably my imagination.

    No, I DON'T vote Conservative.

I like your style, Mr green.

And I shall listen out next time. He is one of the best of the best, IS.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

      Love it!

Going to try this game myself!

I think just listen to John Humphries for a balance to any Lib Lab bias - like a Conservative pub bore most of his questions seem based on and the comparatively easy ride he gives Osborne is always instructive - Evan Davies's own right wing economic views colour all his interviews on economics too .

The BBC playing along with the no alternative economic policy over the last few years has been an utter scandal

Just an adminstrative notice: I did propose some time back that we shouldn't start threads containing the name of individual Radio 3 personnel because, although they are very often started with the intention of praising the individual, there will be sure to be someone who will eventually contribute some 'mean-spirited' comment, even if it means hunting out the thread and resurrecting it six months afterwards in order to do so.

Naturally enough, the comments about IS are habitually complimentary - his sense of humour being particularly appreciated. But I have been reminded by another member of my original proposal ...

Criticisms of what are seen as shortcomings, either in the programme being presented or the presentation are one thing; personal opinions indicating that you don't 'like' an individual are discouraged.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

So does that mean we can't talk about a certain person's over-pronunciation of foreign names?

She's definitely not a news reader... a pretty dreadful conductor though!

Oh, I don't know about the rights or wrongs of this thread but I regard IS on Radio 3, gratefully, as one of the pre-BP presenters. I'll leave it at that.

He's chairing the pre-Prom discussion of Manfred at the RCM this afternoon which will be edited for transmission in the interval.

What a shame we can't discuss human beings.

I haven't noticed any problems with either John Humphries or Evan Davies, and I certainly don't support "right wing" parties such as the Conservatives or UKIP. However, the notions of left and right seem somewhat dubious these days, as even Labour under Blair veered off in directions which dyed in the wool socialists would not approve of.
