You won't regret buying the Hahn Schönberg concerto recording; it's probably the finest performance of it ever recorded.

I've never even considered which would be my ten favourite VCs, but off the top of my head, I'd say:

      Beethoven
      Bartok 2
      Britten
      Prokofiev 1
      Shos 1
      Elgar
      Korngold
      Nielsen
      Szymanowski 1
      Walton
      Delius

That's 11 - but yes, this "Desert Island" exercise is not easy...

It's interesting how some candidates come up far more frequently than others, especially in the case of Szymanowski 1, whose reputation and popularity, reflected in a considerable clutch of recordings, has all but skyrocketed from the days when it was a real rarity.

I seem to be the only poster to have cited the Bloch, which still is quite a rarity...

Thought I'd just check who was paying attention!

            Well,if I didn't stipulate a number some clever-clogs would take it over.

It is the ONLY rule on this one and I am shocked at the number Idon't know/can't sing in my head, being deaf until I can see someone about it.

Look after your hearing, don't know where I went wrong.

              Somebody call?

The thing is ... since making my list, the only Violin Concertos that have buzzed around my head have been the Beethoven and Brahms (which I missed out, because there are other Concertos by both composers involving solo violins that I enjoy more). Can I ditch Dvorak and Barber and substitute these?

AND, if a little cheating is allowed could I have a non-Concerto, please: Ferneyhough's Terrain. (What is the purpose of Rules - especially "only" ones - if not to have something to break! )

I'm upset that I left out Ben Frankel's fine Concerto and that nobody else has remembered it.

But if you could reduce your list to ten(!), which two would go?

Schönberg would, I suspect, be astonished and delighted that several members have selected his!

Bartok 1 and Szymanowski 1 go. Schoenberg definitely stays, it's in my top 5.

P.S. He was Schoenberg when he wrote the violin concerto. He had stopped being Schönberg.

I can't help feeling sorry for anton if he is going to sort this out.

Can't you find a deputy anton, if you are busy?
