Anyone fancy going to the top of the Forth Bridge?!

It's long been an ambition of mine to go to the very top of this amazing structure that has figured strongly in my life despite me having no head for heights. Anyone else keen to try?

Are you asking for one of us to come with you to offer moral support?

If so, count me in. It must be an amazing viewpoint.

I'd be too scared of the height to sully Forth.

I can see it from the top of the bus as I go into town and I'd love to see the reverse view.

I would love to do that too!! Someone once said that with listening to JSB's cantatas, is like crossing The Forth Bridge. Once you have reached the end, you have to go back to the beginning again.

Anyone else remember Kenneth Clark's "Civilisation" series in the late 60's ? - he famously dubbed this beautiful bridge a "brontosaurus of technology" (in a good way). I've crossed it many times (on the train, obviously) but you don't appreciate its sheer beauty when you're on it. This sounds a pretty good offer, though

I thought that referred to the need to keep painting it.

I read about this earlier today. The Forth Bridge has long been a feature in my life. I remember throwing pennies and ha'pennies from the carriage windows and the shouts of delight when one missed all the metalwork and landed in the Firth. The railway workers must have made a mint from children in those days. Another memory from the 50s was moving to Edinburgh from Fife. Bishop's Move were in charge of proceedings on that occasion, and as father and I crossed the bridge in the evening (mother and young sister had gone earlier) I looked down and saw "our" two yellow vans on the ferry.

Sorry to rabbit on.... What I'm saying is, yes, include me in.

That used to be so, but the paint job recently completed will last for twenty years, apparently. It certainly looks magnificent now.

                          2,467 metres - just over 1.5 miles.

                          Lots more information here.

i didn't know it was possible to climb the Forth Bridge - without having a job as a painter. OTOH there is a bridge climb in Sydney, Oz.

Rails chiefs confirm they are looking at hoisting a viewing platform more than 300ft to the top of the Forth Bridge.
