Well, it could be said to have always been thus. Not sure where I got this from but I originally posted it on the BBC Radio 3 boards about five years ago. It applied then and still applies today.

Bravo encore, shb - you've been cooking on gas lately
and one to remind people that Haitink's 1972 lightbulb changing is unlikely to ever be equalled.
And one perhaps to retail a dubious anecdote about Sir Thomas cracking up the brass section with a quip about a lady cellist sitting rubbing a lightbulb....

Oh, I WAS in lighting, and Lamp Is the proper term, but loads of insiders call them bulbs anyway.
Just to annoy the Lamp specialists. And because a lamp is not JUST a thing that shines, it is also the thing into which it is fixed.
Sometimes.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
Absolutely, ams, yes - I'm just pleased that I called that now notorious thread The Homophobia Championships, great to see that pop up every day! I don't think it became sterile, though some contributors were certainly stubborn! I seemed to end up saying a lot about skylarks...
But don't forget that a discussion about HIFI and Sound Quality (which I posted on) also became very heated and personally abusive (HiFi!?), I think people ended up throwing mud at Venice... no, let these endless threaded melodies ramble on in their complex colourful and temperamental way. Freedom of speech is the freedom to be...bored, etc.
Anyway, I seem to make some people cross when I discuss music at length, so it's probably all my fault. At this point I was going to adapt a certain G&S rhyme, but it would be probably be a bit too naughty, and I'm sure it won't be missed!

Oh we could do a thread on lamps if you REALLY want, Cals......
We could really try to raise the standards round here.
