Laudable sentiments but it's also quite nice to play very much not your best and win nevertheless in a six pointer at the foot of the table (cf Palace v Leicester on Saturday).

A few forum derbies this weekend.

          FA Cup 5th round.

Crystal Palace 1 Liverpool 2. Forum derby,Eagles led at half time,Reds too strong in the 2nd half.

          League.

Sheffield Wednesday 0 Brighton 0.Forum derby,a better point for the Seagulls, just above the bottom 3,Owls mid table, where's Cloughie ?
Hartlepool United 1 Stevenage 3.Managed to draw level just before half time then conceded 2 in 13 2nd half minutes,7 points from safety.
Shrewsbury Town 2 Wimbledon 0. Looked a tough game v the league leaders, the goals came just before and after the break, mid table.
St Mirren 1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 2.Forum derby, couple of ex Stockport players scored,Goodwin and Tansey,Caley 3rd Buddies 10th,can't work out if Ross County beating Motherwell was good for us or not !
East Stirlingshire 1 Elgin City 0. A welcome 3 points secured with a late penaly but remain at the foot of the table.
Grimsby Town 0 Bristol Rovers 1. The winner came mid way through the 2nd half,2nd place, just 4 points off the top after Barnet's defeat.
Wrexham 1 Barnet 0. Fantastic win v the league leaders, the goal came on 24 minutes, did Bristol Rovers a big favour.
Maidenhead United 2 Chelmsford 0.Conceded early and late goals, lost a bit of form lately, down to 7th
Stockport County 2 Hyde 0.Very straightforward win, should have scored more goals, keeps us on the fringe of the play off places.
Banbury 1 Truro City 2.Good win v the bottom team, remain in 3rd and with the top 2 dropping points it's very close between the top 3.

          Leicester play tomorrow.

No games for Newcastle,Coventry.Chelsea and Southampton.

            The Ghost is laid
            The bogey is broke
            But it was no joke
            Palace, well played...

Quite a few anxious moments from Palace's fast attack, but surprised how well we controlled things after our two goals. One sequence in the 2nd half was like a pass-and-move exhibition, I lost count of the passes. Could have done with a third to calm the nerves, if you're only 1-up 94th minute free kicks are never a good look...
But Balotelli fitting in better (after that brill winner against Spurs) and pleased at our playmaking in the absence of Gerrard and Sterling...

There's just ONE team to avoid in the draw, U know who... not yet please. Leave that spite and edge till the final...

Palace might even have led 2-0, had Gayle taken his good chance but they went on to fizzle out rather disappointingly. I got thoroughly fed up with the BT Sport commentators. Poor Michael Owen - banal and not disguising his bias.

Neither can I Rob but it's till in our own hands etc etc. Big Yogi's doing a fine job at the Caledonian Stadium - got manager of the month for January and seems to have a good team spirit...and not only did Big Jim score, he didnae get booked!

Stop press, football news as it happens.

Aston Villa 2 Leicester City 1. No cup cheer for Foxes, goalkeeping blunder for the Villa 2nd,reply came too late, time to concentrate on getting out of the bottom 3

... and a pretty drear game ... Benteke played slightly slower than a totem pole for Villa; and the Foxes need a new manager according to the season ticket holders in the market yesterday ...

I caught the 2nd half which only came to life when Villa scored.

yep Bacuna and Sinclair showed some spirit as did Cleverley in the second half but both teams would struggle to stay in the championship on their present form ...

Yes, the only two highlights really from a game which signally lacked "the magic of the Cup" - one had the impression throughout of a finely honed continental knife passing regularly through a rather soft lump of North-Eastern butter. Since I was there due to a personal connection with one of the 'Boro players, it was disappointing by-and-large. Mind you, a gorgeous winter sunset over beyond the Clock End!

Some magnificent singing from the irrepressible travelling fans though - wall-of-sound stuff creating a distinct and spine-tingling connection between "Mighty Boro we're going up" and "Auferstehen" from last night...
