No, the ball is the wrong shape for a start.

The biggest game this evening is surely Alfreton Town v Stockport County (losing 3-0 already btw )

In the mid 70s I went to my first rugby game in the West End of Glasgow - I think it was a Glasgow select against the Australians. I was with some Yoonie pals who were rugby guys and were really excited about the game. They were getting fed up with me because I kept asking questions about what was happening on the pitch - I said I was sorry, but I was used to Bill McLaren telling me what was going on.

I then noticed that there was a BBC Commentary box set up and wandered over and there was Bill in the box commenting for BBC Scotland. I stood there and watched the game with Bill in the background keeping me right - just as it should be!

Nice story. But then of course there is the matter of playing rugby not fully understanding the rules. In the South East knowledge depends on class background - or it used to. Until I went to senior school, I had never discussed rugby. No one had been interested in it. It was different I think everywhere else.

The World Cup has probably made a big difference. Still, I have always thought there should be more sports stuff on blackboards in schools. As it was, it was just get out there with the 95% who have been playing since the age of six. It was a bit like trying to communicate in a foreign language.

If it was before I was born, it would have to have been in the 1950s, were they bad then as well?

I am very proud to say that the only FA Cup Final I attended is a contender for the most grinding final of all time. Actually it probably just loses out to the other of that year, which was as dull as ditchwater, for this was a replay on a rainy Thursday night.

1993. Arsenal 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1. Linighan scored the winner in the 119th minute.

The rainiest game I ever attended was at Hillsborough before the cover. My only visit there. Torrential from beginning to end. Sheffield Wednesday versus Norwich City in the early eighties. Three of us at the home end, as if for 90 minutes we had been swimming. Friends who were Canaries at the other, from hazy memory smugly dry.

It was proper football, Arsenal won everything in those days, Georgie Graham was God and I have never really rated enjoyment.
