So humiliating, but well done to Iceland nevertheless.

      Can anything else go wrong?

I think it's a good thing that it's put paid to any phoney 'bread and games' euphoria to take attention away from the débâcle at the end of last week.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                An oldie but a goodie:

The England team visited an orphanage in France yesterday.

"It's heartbreaking to see their little faces with no hope" said Jean-Philippe, aged 5

Works every time, Cal...seems that England have broken some kind of record, leaving Europe twice in a week by their own hand. But they were well beaten by a terrific Icelandic outfit. Italy still looking very good - ts must be worried about Pelle remaining. Potentially great game ahead v the Germans next weekend.

The awkward moment when you spot yourself on the big screen and want people to think you've got a plan.

"Bobby Charlton, how would your 1966 team have fared against Iceland?"

                              "We would have won 1-0"

                              "Only 1-0 ?"

"Yes, most of us are in our 70's now."

As mentioned elsewhere, I've been on a brief trip to NW Scotland, staying in a small B & B. Total occupancy, two German couples - who all spoke good English - and me.

At breakfast on the day after England's exit, the proprietor asked me for my views.

"Well," I said, "The Germans have a word for it. Schadenfreude."

                                The place erupted.
