For heaven's sake Roy, get Sturridge on NOW! This game's made for his skills, he could've had a firsthalf hat-trick. Kane is looking slow to the ball in the box, always a step behind .... Rooney good in his current role though. Not something I've said much about him before in tournaments.

        slow day up there, JC?

since you were kind enough to ask, despite carrying a rather niggly calf injury, I managed to get a late equaliser in a 6 -6 draw this week. Irritated by a couple of decent earlier efforts that hit the post etc, I managed to bundle the ball past a couple of defenders, and put a rather untidy finish through the keepers legs.

most of the lads are about 25.....

          Well done, Wales!

As our Celtic Cousins, they are representing Scotland this time, along with the two Irelands, of course.

Oh dear, Rooney misses an open goal!

Can't we get him off, he's just frustrating Alli. Having a good game is fine, but it's the wrong game.

Of course we can always rely on a Spurs defender to show Rooney where the goal is!

Maybe that was the secret plan, to win the game from a set-piece with a defender.

I'm getting Greenwood flavoured deja vu.

Was that equaliser a result of an inherent weakness in zonal defending, or is it just that we need to work on the finer points of man to man covering?

Hmmmm..the defensive frailties shown up, and despite some decent passing, Kane and Sterling having off nights, and Lallanas moderate finishing cost us dear.
Clyne really is a better player than Walker, FWIW.

I don't think Kane's performance was an off night. I think that unlocking the opposition is best left to Alli. He's quicker, more direct, plays Kane in properly but will always defer to Rooney, if Rooney's on the pitch.

England would maybe have been out of sight by the time Russia scored if Sturridge or Vardy had been on the pitch.

Oooh, sucker punch! However you play you don't give one away in the 91st, scrappily defending a random high ball, you just DON'T. But with more firepower in the first half we wouldn't have had to worry would we? All that great approach play, Kane slow in, no out-&-out striker to take the chance time and again. Is Kane supposed to be a deadball specialist, taking so many corners? So who sticks them in then? Lallana's erratic finishing is wellknown, and Sterling's skills take him up too many blind alleys - he should be better at going past people by NOW...

Ol' man Rooney tired and off, Wilshere looked good or better in a similar role, hope he stays fit. But with this shape we need a quicker-thinking and moving, better international-class finisher than Kane on his own. Was Sturridge not considered fully fit yet? Hodgson, packing his midfield, defended 1-0 too early, surely it would've been worth giving 10 or 15 minutes to him or Vardy.

It's always worth trying to win your group, better be 1st playing 2nd than the reverse next round. Russia may well be the weakest team in the group - whatever Wales or Slovakia lack in allround class (Bale & Hamsik notwithstanding) they do have appetite.

Wot? Did Roy play Sterling rather than Sturridge? Incomprehensible, unless he's saving him for bigger fish. Sturridge should find his Scottish Grannie - he'd get a game every time for wee Gordy's boys (Beach football). Must watch highlights just to check what went wrong.

By the way, ts, thanks for the 5-a-side update. 6-6...nice. Highlights on later, I hope - looking forward to seeing your screamer!

Should have been 3-1 England and might have been with Vardy.

Vardy should have been involved in the game (take your pick when) and I agree, he would have made a difference. IMV, the Tottenham boys deserve to be in the team on individual merit, but we should take advantage of their understanding of one another. Alli running the attacking midfield and Kane the target man. Vardy can (and must be) used at some point, but Rooney left out (I say this as a United fan). I don't get the Sterling bit and Sturridge, although a top-notch player, can only be considered behind Kane and Vardy, as an impact sub. We seem to have another one of those sentimental managers that we go in for, from time to time. Where's Sir Alf Ramsey when you need him!?
