Daren't mention it - but a win on Tuesday over Brighton may add a drop to the half full glass.

Great to see the old stadium so full on Tuesday - including the ill fated end behind the goal which seems to have been empty for so long.

Alison, I've seriously thought that we should have moved to a new stadium - even sharing it with the Blunts - no I would not share Bramall Lane - but a new stadium. I can't think that over the last few years of Owls austerity that the Hillsborough name has helped to lure a buyer but thanks to the Mandaric catalyst and then the real money now we hopefully are following the Leicester pattern!
Meanwhile we look forward to next week's Tale of Two (small) Cities.

For the Southern Sainty I just noticed this is the 30th anniversary of Matt Le Tissier scoring for the first time for Southampton in a 4-1 v Manyoo. This isn't it but it takes some beating. (sorry Beefy!)

These days he spends his time on 'Pronunciation Watch' but I have been asked not to reveal him by his internet name. A bit of follow-up on the "most goals scored in a top flight game" which we discussed during one of Aguero's short periods without injury. Still best to keep with Harry Kane, fantasy footballers, when Surge returns. Anyhow, I relayed the tremendous information you provided about Ted Drake to a train driving neighbour with whom I had initially mused. His first reaction was an understandable "blimey, that far back" but on reflection he brought up the name Denis Law. Law scored six on January 28th 1961 and still ended up on the losing side. Way before my time, of course, but here's how:

I suppose if one is being picky it was a cup match but it was an interesting moment nonetheless. Also, I understand that Dennis Bergkamp's parents were fans of Law and named their son after him. However, Dutch authorities refused to recognise the name unless it was spelt with two n's as they felt it was otherwise too similar to the female name Denise.

My Huddesfield supporting rellies still wax lyrical about the great man.

Ah yes, very early that, and Rob is right to place me with York City from 1982 although the Arsenal were from my earlier decade. "One" of the things on the latter about which I am proud is, in reverse time order, the incorporation of the French, black players, players from Ireland and Scotland and successful managers from County Durham and Yorkshire. An advanced club in every way with loyalty in the long-term and a strong sense of history, "we" are, of course, South London at root. People make mistakes. Atkinson made a mistake as a pundit and he paid a heavy price for it. What he said didn't bother me unduly because I think if you know where you stand solidly there is no need for any modern posing about outrage. Also, I'm fine with the football guys who don't claim to be anything else. I do like erudition and wisdom in football. Big, big fan in broadcasting terms of Tim Vickery. It is the ones between those points on which I have doubts - the Murphys, Nevilles and Hoddles, notwithstanding that the latter is so individual he isn't easily put into any sort of plural!

Also, I currently have Pelle, Mane and Bertrand in my ff team. Like many, I guess, I have always had a soft spot for Saints since Mcmenemy plus I had several mates across the years who are Saints fans. Am staggered by how Pochettino who I rate was able to leave along with very many players who subsequently did little, mainly at Liverpool, and how Koelman is succeeding so I also rate him. Good luck to you. But if Wenger ever has to go I want Martinez for Arsenal because the manner has to be Arsenal. Not many achieve it in my opinion although Robson was one who would have been right. We'll sort out the ability later. I hope we never go for bombast or Klopp/Van Gaal idiosyncrasy. I'm odd like that!

But you can bet your boots they're missing Jordan Rhodes - I reckon they've been ten places lower since he went!

Can't understand why no PL team has given him a chance.
he used to terrorise L1 when we were there.

I see the Terriers have just sacked Chris Powell.

BTW, Town have the unenviable record , for a club of their stature, of not having reached a quarter final of either of the two main cups since about 1970.

Yes, but to be fair if you are looking for footballing astonishment in Yorkshire it has to be Leeds and to a lesser extent my personal favourite of the so-called top flight from that county Sheffield Wednesday, whatever the argy-bargy over the years between them and Arsenal. I have stood there as a neutral and loved the atmosphere even when without roof and in pouring rain. Not that any of it matters because if I was ever to find a third club - "Premier" - on account of moving north, it would be Newcastle but I can't see it happening!
