Reacting to the England WC squad announcement, this comment on the BBC website made me smile (wryly):

Worst England squad to leave these shores for a World Cup ever? Certainly since 1982. Oh well the good squads got us nowhere so trying a poor squad is a novel new approach. Roy's a breath of fresh air. No expectation = no disappointment. Result!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

On the other hand, IF you believe in omens, portents, soothsayers and superstition ......
the last time Austria won Eurovision was in 1966, some years they didn't even qualify past the initial stages ......

            Portent Watch.....
..and Southampton had their highest ever league position in 1966, gaining promotion to Div 1 for the first time.
in 2014 Saints enjoyed their best ever PL season...

and of course there are 3 Saints in the squad.

have to say of the 3 Saints,I am most pleased to see Ricky on the plane. I'm sure he will make the most of every minute. It really is a football fairy tale after his early years in the lower leagues.
Adam will be a star out there.

Back to the quote up thread, it certainly looks the worst England defence to go to a world cup.
Think the rest of the squad looks to have a bit about it, certainly some flair. I think they may give us a decent run.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

...but have any of them as quality a beard, Anna? (most of the squad not old enough, I reckon). I believe that Wee Eck Salmond is praying for an England win in Brazil...if anything were to guarantee a 'Yes' vote it would be the unthinkable.

Thanks for the round-ups, Rob...they have been a must-read all season. We've binned our manager...out of contract and no renewal offered...we'll always have Hampden, Danny.
I'd like to say that this is in the running for my goal of the season.

Did the Saints used to run out to a Chris Barber record?

                          Since you mention it.
Fraser Forster had a loan spell with us,as did John Ruddy, who is on standby.

Thanks for your efforts over the season, Rob. It is gratifying that Palace with their remarkable final thrust managed not only to save themselves but to queer the pitch of several top teams - Everton, Chelsea, Liverpool, although I suppose it was ultimately the Gerard trip which thwarted Liverpool rather than Gayle's equaliser.

It would be churlish of me to take pleasure in Brighton's miserable failure in their attempt to reach the play-off final and then to sack yet another manager after their ignominious defeat by Derby.

                                Quite right too.

I nominate Crystal Palace as forum team of the season.
