Yes, thank goodness Alan is there to help us with that one. Worth every single one of the half million+ a year we pay him for these incredible insights
      and observations.

Wow, what an amazing bit of insight from the bald-one!

Balotelli comes good at last, what a finish for the second goal.
The boy Pirlo can play a bit too.

Hard to think of a better player in the tournament than Pirlo - class written over him every time he gets near the ball, Rob. Makes for an interesting looking final - I like the Italian defence and if the right Balotelli shows up the Spanish will have much to think about.

Strange to reflect that England actually ran the Italians closer than the Germans - on paper at least.

Er Zilch! To mark the passing of Germany - and hasn't that been the story in competitions since 1996 - I'm bringing back my 2nd and 3rd sentences in post 1647 and my 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th sentences in post 1681:

The good teams are winning. Not one in this competition is brilliant, enjoyable though it is.

Good as the semi-finalists are, they have all had at least one 45 minutes when they have looked very ordinary and in most cases more than one. The hype will say something different by next weekend. Let it. We'll just bank the reality.

Los Angeles 1994. Nadie interpreta Nessun Dorma como él.06/09/07 Pavarotti nos ha dejado, aunque su legado SIEMPRE le mantendrá vivo. DEP.

Germany's Tournament Beyond All the Hype -

Portugal - Dull against Portuguese, struggled to create chances, only came to life when they scored
Netherlands - Dominant, flashes of brilliance, but beat a disorganised ageing team by just one goal
Denmark - Very impressive against the Danes, organised, fluid, but only won by one goal
Greece - Effective where it counts only in the second half, still let in two goals against a weak team
Italy - Struggled although they had two extra days to rest, again defensively poor, lost the game

Like the English Premier League last season, there's two or three teams at the top and the rest are all in a group in the middle, capable of taking points off any of the others. My issue has been that apart from Pirlo there's been no great performers who have lit up the tournament. I do like the Italian left back Chiellini, mind you - there's a guy that you'd want in your team. The Italians are the one team who have exceeded expectation. The Germans didn't have a plan B, which was surprising for me. The Spanish look like they've got bored keeping the ball and Iniesta and Xavi look like they're looking for Messi all the time to give the ball to. I still expect Spain to win (though I always like to see the Italians do well), but the football, while exciting at times, has been generally low in quality through the competition. Maybe the season's just got too long for me, and like the top players I need to get to the beach.

Surely one of the all-time silly 'Colemanballs' comments from BBC Sports reporter Gary Richardson on Radio 4 this morning when talking to a colleague who was at the match:

'After last night's game, must we all now take Italy very seriously ... ?'

Bit late for some, Gary ...

I agree with the comments regarding Pirlo ... what a superb all-round player!

Heard it and thought something similar - although 'The Dutch have a good record against Holland.' from Clive on the ITV was pretty good.

I fancy Montolivo for Man U....please [several or all Brazzilians could go to finance this]

                              Proper Football Match....

Balotelli....then he had to spoil it by taking his shirt off and getting booked [yet another accident waiuting to happen again]....could easily have got sent off had he challenged in his usual ugly irresponsible way....
