To say that these men paid their shillings to watch twenty-two hirelings kick a ball is merely to say that a violin is wood and catgut, that Hamlet is so much paper and ink.
For a shilling the Bruddersford United AFC offered you Conflict and Art. (JB Priestley).

The game is run by some silly people though.

So, no, it isn't "just a silly game." It's a "silly game" if you choose to look at it that way. IMHO .

... now there's some quality responses!

Mind you, it's a jolly silly game...

i am sorry but football is neither jolly nor silly; as Mr Shankly said "Some people think that football is a matter of life and death. l am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you that it is much much more important than that." ...i think he was deliberately understating the case so as not to frighten the ladies ....

Returning to the head-to-head vs. goal difference debate, it's interesting to note that the team with the joint worst goal difference came top of Group A. Head-to-head makes Oxford United better than Barcelona. (Oxford beat Swindon, who beat Wigan, who beat Newcastle, who beat Chelsea, who beat Barcelona.)

And if the excitement of the Euros isn't enough for you, the fixtures for the new league season are published tomorrow.

It almost makes up for tonight's news on Walcott. We hope for a speedy recovery.

Good to see Peter and the Wolf getting an airing from ITV following its recent use as the theme to Zoo Time in the 1950s.

The best teams won today. The more traditional the kit, the greater the skill. Goalkeeper Hart please take note.

I felt sorry for the Danes. In my only Euro attendance, the Roligans were not as fearsome as their image. They all played musical instruments, grinned a lot and wore knitted hats with horns. Much more fun than the Bulgarians who were no fun at all.

Then they attempted to leave the three sided stadium through a natural cliff face.

(So dial if you think you know the stadium. Confirm with your service provider that the cost of the call won't be £50 a minute).

the point about the head to head rule, which imv is quite sensible, is that if two teams are tied on points the one that has beaten the other goes through with no corollary of extending this in an infinite regress for the momentary relief of Oxford United ..... in a short league such as the group stage of the euros this is arguably a better rule than the goal difference rule of a long term league such as the League 2 in which Oxford United struggled valiantly or no ....

And don't forget to wipe your feet on your way out of the ground.

Can't believe it's taken Italy so long to score against Ireland who have been hanging on for dear life.
I hope the floodgates don't now open because that would be a real shame, especially for the Irish fans.

Yes thanks Beef. I think there was a short time when my two teams were 1 and 92 in the alphabet. Not sure if there was a week when they also occupied those positions. Arsenal first, obviously yes, but York last? Surely not.

(Now to Ireland v Italy as it sounds like things are happening)
