    Elmore Leonard 1925-2013

    RIP

The prolific US crime writer Elmore Leonard, whose books include Get Shorty and Out of Sight, dies at the age of 87.

I've enjoyed a few Elmore Leonards over the years, usually on trips to the US. I remember a strange trip to New Orleans once for a meeting which turned out to be very short, leaving me free to ramble around and sit in bars in the old town drinking mint juleps and reading my Elmore Leonard...

I also rate his '10 rules for writers' ... especially:

1 Never open a book with weather....

    ...

3 Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue. The line of dialogue belongs to the character; the verb is the writer sticking his nose in. But "said" is far less intrusive than "grumbled", "gasped", "cautioned", "lied". I once noticed Mary McCarthy ending a line of dialogue with "she asseverated" and had to stop reading and go to the dictionary.

4 Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said" ... he admonished gravely. To use an adverb this way (or almost any way) is a mortal sin. The writer is now exposing himself in earnest, using a word that distracts and can interrupt the rhythm of the exchange. I have a character in one of my books tell how she used to write historical romances "full of rape and adverbs".

5 Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose...

6 Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose". This rule doesn't require an explanation. I have noticed that writers who use "suddenly" tend to exercise less control in the application of exclamation points....

    ...

Get an accountant, abstain from sex and similes, cut, rewrite, then cut and rewrite again – if all else fails, pray. Inspire by Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing, we asked authors for their personal dos and don'ts
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I've never read any of his work, but the 10 Rules suggest that I'll like the books!

There was a discussion on here, about him. I think it was decided he was a sexist bloke's author, as in Get Shorty (sort of those dames with pistols, type of thingy)

Enjoyed the books I have read ......I like Rule 10

10 Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip. Think of what you skip reading a novel: thick paragraphs of prose you can see have too many words in them.
