    Independent arts cuts

I don't read The Independent on Sunday, but this must be bad news for us all:

Simon Price and Nicholas Barber will no longer appear weekly in the Sindy, with columnist Tom Sutcliffe to leave daily paper. By Josh Halliday

A huge shame. I do read The Independent on Sunday but won't continue if it is devoid of arts coverage, which I find to be generally pretty good. I'll probably go back to The Observer and see how long that lasts.

The Guardian reports this in today's Corrections Column:

An article about the Independent on Sunday reported that it is to close its arts section. Although The Critics will no longer appear after 1 September, the paper will continue to have a dedicated arts and books section (Independent on Sunday closes arts section, 30 July, page 11).

Good old Grauniad - not exactly a disinterested bystander in the matter. I'll wait and see what happens.

It was a very quick correction! I imagine The Independent's lawyers made sure of that.

According to Norman Lebrecht's blog, despite sacking all of its critics, the Independent still wants to receive all the free tickets and free copies of books and CDs that are afforded to a newspaper that covers the arts:

I know that Storming Norman is not always the most reliable reporter, but as he quotes the Indie's letter, it seems he is correct on this one.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

This section from the editor's letter sounds ominous:

the arts section will concentrate on features, interviews, essays, previews and comment.

In other words, prepare for plenty of showbiz waffle.
