Nice article - the programme can be watched here

I hope that Sir David's recent emergency heart surgery to fit a pacemaker has been completely successful and that he's well on the way to a complete recovery - we and the planet and its contents need his voice more than ever

His recent series about the insect world on Sky was amazing. Even if one occasionally felt the urge to hide behind the sofa....

Just listened to the resulting album....must say I'm underwhelmed....I expected it to be a much less commercial enterprise....so the dance beats, and drum and bass like elements take it far away from the spatial landscape piece I was hoping for....I think the cg visuals for album are excellent though....

The programme is very worth watching, if only for the bit (about 20mins in) which demonstrates the different patterns created in sand by Musical pitches: the higher the pitch, the more elaborate the resulting shapes. Björk has done some splendid educational work in Iceland, but, like 8ob, I was rather disappointed by the Musical results of what sounded might be a fascinating project. And I kept thinking "Yes, but Xenakis (or whoever) did that in the '70s, why is the voice-over claiming this as some astonishing new initiative?" And the fuzzy lines on the touch-screens looked more "intimidating" to my eyes than the traditional notation that was supposed to put people off making their own Music - but then, I don't suppose I'm exactly the target audience for the new technology. I assume that this new technology will allow greater scope for more adventurous sounds than the arpeggionic loops we were shown?

Interesting that a figurehead of the Beeb like Sir David is making so many programmes for the Beeb's rivals these days: but what's happened to the portrait of Alfred Russell Wallace that Bill Bailey unveiled in the foyer of the Natural History Museum?
