Incidentally, Pete Murray, also 87 now, who was a champion of similar fare to DJ was dismissed by the BBC (R2) in the 80s because his style was too old-fashioned! When did the dumbing down start?
Pete Murray used to present a late evening show on a Sunday for London's premier phone-in station LBC. On one famous occasion he took advantage of the break for the news to go for his own comfort break. Sadly, on completing his task (and washing his hands I'm sure - he was so old-fashioned) he alarmed his producer by turning in the wrong direction, away from the studio where he was due to continue his programme and was halted in the car park in the nick of time before he drove home

"Hello There" - or perhaps not any longer
Did any of you listen to the final programme last night? Poignant stuff - and some great choices. The Morgana King 'Just Friends' was gorgeous and particularly apposite, just before the last word from Bing Crosby (whom Jacobs prefers over Sinatra). DJ did sound very frail last night - but I do hope he makes the occasional reappearance.
...the last word from Bing Crosby ...Thank you David Jacobs
I suppose that will have been I Love You Samantha? That was always his sign-out on a programme, IIRC, that went out on the Light Programme at 11.00 p.m. on Saturdays. I used to listen to it when I was about eleven, so conscious of listening to this adult: strange, now, to think that he was thirty at the time.
I still miss Jimmy Young. At least Mr Jacobs has been given a dignified departure, one presumes, of his own volition. Jimmy Young was unceremoniously dumped after years of sterling service. His replacement - the overweening, patronising and irritating Mr Vine - never having held a candle to him IMHO.

indeed...
That was DJ's signature tune up to the end, yes, but the last song he played (by Bing) was "Incurably Romantic".
Much as he intimated in his final broadcast, I've just been and checked on the cabinet known as The David Jacobs Collection and I can confirm, not only is it unlocked but he's also left it open a little.
Thank you for the music, David. Thanks for all the years of 'our kind of music'.
He will be much missed by many of us - his Sunday evening programme was always a delight and he did have real style as a broadcaster. Though he did sound very poorly in his last show. RIP.
I was very saddened to hear of his passing. I used to listen to and enjoy his Sunday programme on R2 as a teenager when I was just getting into classical music. As others have said, thank you for the music, David. RIP.
