oh no, Roy was still playing the Hants side in the early 70's , Ams. He retired in 72. His autobiography (and the story of Hants first championship in 1961 was treasured possession.)
By the time I started watching around 1971, Roy had dropped down to about no 4 I think, but was revered by the older fans.

I was talking about Malcolm Marshall, though Andy Roberts was always the one who terrified me. He seemed to fill the county ground. You wouldn't have wanted to face him.

There is a story that on his debut for the hants seconds, the first 4 batsmen retired hurt,,,,,!!
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Roy Marshall and Derek Shackleton were my first two Hants heroes which grew out of my love of & admiration of John Arlott I guess. You've already mentioned Greenidge & Barry Richards who came later - what an opening pair! ;ok:

      Aaaah summer!

I do know my Tremletts, being , as you know a Hampshire boy.

Spent a lot of summer days as a kid down at the county ground watching Richards, and Greenidge open the batting, and Roberts or Marshall taking no prisoners.
        Very happy days !!
        Sorry ts, I misunderstood.

Hants certainly used to have some great players ! Richards was sublime when he was in the mood and Marshall was a genius. Saw most of these myself at Northlands Road - we might even have been at some of the same games ! Ever see any games at Mays Bounty ( Basingstoke ) ? One of my most cherished memories was this game against my County ( Yorks ).

Gower's innings ( 155 ) was sublime and to see him play at such close quarters was wonderful.

Classic Arlott comment about the unusual surname of Bob Cunis, the New Zealand test player: "It's a bit like his bowling, neither one thing nor another".

Agnew and Vic Marks are the best for me. CMJ's enthusiasm for the game at all levels was unparalled. He will indeed be sorely missed.

Gower was a delight to watch, but for me Barry Richards will always be the man. I would grudgingly accept that Viv was a better player, as he did it so regularly at top level , and I suppose Tendulkar and Lara did too. But if I could choose to watch a player in form and on their day, I would choose Barry every time. He just played shots you couldn't believe.

Never seen us play at Basingstoke( never been as dedicated as I am to the Saints !)

I was at one of the last games at Northlands road, which IIRC correctly was against your lot, and again IIRC during the big petrol shortage?
The outfield, I have to say, looked a right state by then !!

The sad thing about Barry Richards was that his Test career was ended after just 4 tests, due to the sporting isolation of South Africa. Who knows what a test record he might have had. He was a marvellous player ( and once scored 325 in a single day in Australian cricket ! ) but I would have to give the nod to Viv as a better player, along with Tendulkar.

                    Bugler! Cook out for 13

It'll be down to Trott & Root now - imagine Blowers getting his tongue around those two ... "Is it Toot or Rott at the wicket, my dear old thing?"

Oh and the advent of Simon Mann for the first time this Ashes series

Double Bugler - Root out for 31, 78-2 just as Sir Geoffrey was getting into his stride about how rubbish the bowling has been.

Pietersen's in & starts edging from ball one!

The nightmare pairing of Oofy Prosser commentating and Dave Podmore summarising has just come together

Incidentaly Pod's latest, "Dave Podmore's Ashes Shame" is currently on the iPlayer.
