And what in any case is "Danish oil"? Something prepared from bacon fat?

Poorly-informed members, who nonetheless retain a thirst for at least base knowledge, may be exceedingly grateful to Yours Truly for providing the following link ...

Danish Oil is a nice finish if french polish* is too 'bright' (or you're not skilled enough to use it). You just rub it into the wood with a soft cloth, polishing it dry, and build up a nice gleam with several layers. Dispose of the cloths carefully as they are highly combustible.

*I hope ahinton is not going to ask whether it is French or Polish.

Then you should consider questioning your suspicions. Lord Tebbit (one "t" please - no sugar) was from a so-called working class background and had anti-homosexual views, although whether or not his grandfather shared those views is not something about which I have any idea. Whatever his sexual standpoint, he hailed in any case from Middlesex, not Essex.

Then I look forward to the outcome of your researches, however short they may be; if indeed "Danish oil" is for the uses that you assume, the connection here is yet to be proven, methinks.

Then the Sorabji connection, if any, seems even more tenuous, lest it be something to do with the spontaneous combustion mentioned in the article to which you have kindly linked.

As it is supposedly Danish, why would I ask such a question, especially as I see no connection with Chopin either?

All that I would suggest, however, is that, as it is clearly of pan-European application, it might well get purloined in the forthcoming referendum as an illustration of the need to maintain European unity.

I thought you might have noticed that the asterisk (*) came after 'french polish' rather than Danish or Danish Oil, and therefore the footnote referred to french polish rather than Danish Oil. French polish, as far as I know, is not even supposedly Danish.

Whilst I noticed the asterisk, it preceded "I hope ahinton is not going to ask whether it is French or Polish", hence my response; I had referred, after all, to Danish oil and NOT to French polish which, I am sure, is "not even supposedly Danish", as you write, although the original reference to it remains unclear (to me, at least) in the context in which it appeared.

                            Indeed, good work BBM.

We have been re modelling( I like to think of it as) a garden over the last two weeks. Lots of hard manual work.
I'm knackered. It has gone really well, and the weather has been really kind, though. Most of the tough stuff done for now.
                            Hurrah.
Cheesecake and some decent music to relax.
