This afternoon I undertook a long round trip of S London on my bike, looking for food items that had been on my shopping list since last Friday, but have always been sold out in my nearest branches of the main supermarket and mini supermarket outlets in the district, Tescos and Sainsbury's. And in the end, I did manage to find what I was looking for, by-and-large, with the exception of eggs and frozen sliced beans. Eggs were of particular importance since I am down to my last one. At each establishment enquiries as to when the next delivery was due were met with a "Dunno mate - could come any day at any time". And so - as has happened on another recent occasion - I paid a visit to one of the "corner shops" situated down a side street not 10 minutes' walk from where I live. The one still open at 5.45 was the little general purposes retailer run by a Polish woman and her Nigerian husband; and there I found the freezer compartments stuffed with packets of frozen vegetables, where there had been none or next to none in the main outlets I had visited half an hour earlier - and vegetables of exotic kinds one would not find in mainstream retailers. Asked about the next availability of eggs, I was told immediately, "Should be here tomorrow, late morning or early afternoon".
So, in this fraught time when things of true value in life are at the forefront of all our thoughts, and small businesses are struggling to survive, I would like to put in a big recommendation for our local corner shops!

I think folks have got so used to doing a big shop at one store that the idea of looking elsewhere is going to take some time to filter through - if indeed it does. The main reasons given for not trying different outlets are time and money - the first is currently much less of an issue for a great many and the second may be less of a consideration depending on how urgent the need is. For now I'm glad that there hasn't been a big swing to the corner shops and equivalents, which I tend to prefer anyway, as it means I'm likely to be able to get what I want from them when I venture out on a food gathering expedition.

Well I am one of the shielded ones! Not allowed out at all whilst all this is going on. Had one important appointment cancelled yesterday, now May 28th, I have to wait, for an infusion treatment I have every eight weeks. I have an appointment with my cancer doc soon, April 8th. I hope that will go ahead.Don’t cry for me

(*One reason why we chose our present dwelling was its proximity to the local Post Office (2 minutes away) on which I was very dependent when working from home. The Post Office then moved into the store, thus shaving 1 minute off the journey time).

I’m feeling better today than yesterday! Had a fever yesterday. Temp 37.5 yesterday!
Apparently I fainted in the bathroom! Not great, I was seated at the time, so thankfully I’m better today, with antebiotics, etc. MrsBBM called the paramedics who were very prompt. Bless them.Don’t cry for me
