    Top Doubles

As a, possibly sly, way of picking up CD recommendations I was wondering if anyone had any favourite CDs of 2 symphonies.

My own current favourite is the BAL recommendation of Prokofiev 1 and 5 / Karajan and the BP. IMHO two wonderful symphonies majestically performed.

Good call, anton. I'm particularly fond of a Furtwangler CD coupling of Brahms #3 and Schubert Unfinished with the same orchestra.

I think my favourite is another Furtwängler CD, this time of the Schubert 9 and Haydn 88 with the Berlin PO (perhaps my favourite single Furtwängler recording).

Thought we had a hot tip for Saturday's racing there, ag, when I saw the thread title

There are some good couplings of the Shostakovich symphonies to be had including 5 & 9, USSR Ministry of Culture SO/Rozhdestvensky (the Olympia issue if you can find it), or 1 & 6, Russian National Orch/Jurowski.

I'm also fond of the Mendelssohn 3 & 4 with Abbado and the LSO. Another great Abbado CD is the Tchaikovsky 2 & 4. I'm sure others will come to mind.

One just has: Schubert 8 & 9, Josef Krips, VPO/LSO.

              Both magic

I'd add Haydn No 82 "The Bear" & Shostakovich 15, Berlin Phil / Kurt Sanderling

(To stray and suggest a "Top Triple" - another recording of Haydn 82 coupled with Nos 22 & 78 in a slightly random one-off from the Stockholm Chamber Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. It's an absolute winner! http://www.amazon.co.uk/music/dp/B00000271A )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Weill: symphonies 1 and 2. For a bonus you also get Busoni: Berceuse elegiaque and Schoenberg: chamber symphony no. 2. Weill is BBCSO cond. Bertini, rest is New Phil. O. cond. Prausnitz.

Dont know if its still available, but its an EMI Classics CD code 7243 5 65869 2 5

                  Kertesz/LSO Dvorak symphonies 8 & 9 - or even better, as a cheap Eloquence twofer, those symphonies plus nos 5 & 7.

I'll see Edgeley's RVW 8 & 9, and raise Boult's DECCA coupling of the Third and Fifth - a favourite LP on ECLIPSE, and then on a BELART CD.
