It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I was going to add, 'A workmanlike display by the sound of it.' But I decided not to.

that would have been ok, I think. nothing more needed though.

"what would Kenneth Wolstenholme have said?" is a good test.

How do people explain the increased length of men's shorts since the 1970s, not just in tennis but in sports generally? Are we supposed to be becoming more prudish?

No explanation apart from - just fashion. Even gents like me of advanced years at my tennis club have succumbed to the baggy trend. I still have a few specimens of the tighter variety lurking at the back of drawers. To turn up wearing them would doubtless invite the same derision as wielding a wooden racquet.

A similar fashion also seems to pervade swimwear where most blokes seem to favour extreme floppy shorts rather than traditional trunks.

I still don't understand why they get two goes at serving!
Make 'em get it right first time!!

Extremely uncomfortable for actually swimming in. One hotel/holiday resort (Alton Towers, possibly?) banned men from wearing trunks because it was a 'family' hotel

What did they wear then? Jeans?
