A similar fashion also seems to pervade swimwear where most blokes seem to favour extreme floppy shorts rather than traditional trunks.
There is actually a perfectly good sporting reason for the longer shorts: they provide a degree of extra warmth, and thereby protection, to the hamstrings. Anyone who has ever taken part in any serious sporting activity will know that when these babies pop (or cramp) the pain is exquisite. It is also game over (in every sense).

I think the men looked much nicer when they had shorter shorts and longer hair.

I've always thought that hamstrings were fairly low down on the leg - between calf & ankle. Which would require plus-fours, if not actual trousers, to keep warm.

On the subject of sexism, Federer was apparently told off because the orange soles of his shoes violated the dress code, but Serena Williams' generous orange/purple knickers seem to have got through OK. Why is this?

Perhaps the dress code does not extend to matters of lingerie?

I saw no orange and purple knickers. The mix of colours would have worried me but I was watching the tennis, not Serena's pants.

It's really difficult to classify them as mere lingerie, as they are such a prominent part of the ensemble .

Good luck to the impeccably attired Laura Robson, second on court no 2.

Haven't the ladies pants (rather than their grunts) been a focus of attention since 'Gussie' Moran flashed hers in 1949?

I've neve been to Wimbledon, although most of my family have and didn't have TV back in the 1940s.

I dimly remember something in the papers though

Sounds like 8tho doesn't consider there to be anything 'mere' about it...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
