I don't follow tennis, never watch it, so boring, but if the favourites, such as Nadal and Federer get knocked out early doesn't it make the rest of the fortnight more exciting when there are unknown Belgians, (and who's the energetic guy with the dreads, Dustin something) possibly making their way to the Finals?
As to the Scottish grass being a Health & Safety issue - aren't most players used to hard surfaces and have forgotten you have to play differently on grass?

Oh well, that shows what I know! Shame though, I am very fond of Belgium and Belgians. Still, great that he can put knocking out Nadal on his CV!
I shall refrain from any more comments on lawn tennis ....

I too like Belgium and the Belgians, and also your comments on things like lawn tennis. Don't stop!

Point of order m'lud, I think he withdrew before his next match on account of an injured shoulder, incurred during a fall in the Nadal match, just to be different .

As for all these leggy Eastern European blondes falling about like impalas on an ice rink, I wonder if it is indeed down to their footwear - wrong soles for grass, they need more friction.

And it was nice to hear McEnroe and Becker reminiscing about the men's serve and volley game, during the Federer-Stakhovsky match, and after the Dustin Brown (he of the rasta hairstyle) beat Lleyton Hewitt. Both victors really mixed up their games.

Do the men grunt as much, or is it only the women? If the men do, are women criticised for it because it's not 'lady like'? & do women do it to show that they are putting a lot of effort into playing & therefore deserve equal prize money with men?

Women would deserve equal prize money if they played an equal number of sets. Simple.

Objection sustained: I was confusing him with another crocked foreigner, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Amazing to look back to this, the men's final of 1975. The shorts , the hair, the rackets, the line judges - old guys dozing on chairs with their legs crossed, hardly a ball boy or girl to be seen.....

This was the year that Connors destroyed the last of the tall serve-volleyers in the semis (Roscoe Tanner) by his new approach to returning the ball - heralding the modern game - only to be completely psyched out by Arthur Ashe in the final - Ashe responded to his hard flat hitting with lobs, slices, chips, completely disrupting the Connors game.

Even then Jimmy Connors looked a bit pudgy compared to other players - now he'd probably look obese . Now it all seems to be about power & force, rather than elegance & subtlety.

I was chatting with some chums yesterday about players, & how much more entertaining they were in the past - Macenroe's name was mentioned; from being the bad boy of tennis he's now evolved into tennis' elder statesman. & it wasn't just the shorts that were short - remember Agasi's shirts, cut extra high at the front (allegedly) so that his abs would be on show when he raised his arm to play a shot?

Even better, there were none of those ridiculous crowd close-ups with which we've been plagued this year.
