How sensible. I'm afraid I'm probably going to give in and watch the tennis, though I may not stay the course. I feel sorry for Murray, with all the expectation. It must be awful to mind so much about winning. (Oh dear, on television he's saying he cried for ages after losing last year.)

Did I just see Mitsuko Uchida in the Royal Box not far away from Milliband, Cameron, Salmond et al...?!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Update is that Mr Inverdale has written to Miss Bartoli to apologise. But if you want to see how sporting heroines are made:

"It doesn't matter, honestly. I am not blonde, yes. That is a fact. Have I dreamt about having a model contract? No. I'm sorry.

"But have I dreamed about winning Wimbledon? Absolutely, yes."

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

              Good for her

I hope Inverdale paid for his own stamp

Murray playing up a storm at the moment, giving Djokovic quite a hard time.

And on a related note, that first set alone was just 22 minutes shorter than the entire ladies' final yesterday. And yet the women are now paid the same prize money as the men.

Seems a tad unequal. Surely the men should get more?

What were the comparable crowd sizes, TV audience sizes, MrPee?

No, it just shows that women are better, more efficient, players and get it over and done with a lot quicker!
Your argument suggests that women tennis players (as is the case in most jobs that women have) should get a reduced hourly rate compared to men?

Ontopic: I watched a bit but I'm not a tennis fan so it's on the radio whilst I get on with other things. I feel sorry for them having to play in such heat.

The argument which the All England Club eventually accepted was that it is not a simple question of the number of sets played but a recognition of the equal value of women's contribution to the game overall.

How unwise of Mr Castle to assume the championship was all but in the bag for Andy Murray.

I do find the fluctuations of morale, of 'momentum' as Henman just called it, much more absorbing over a five-set match, than the three-set format (which is why I'm not very interested by women's tennis or the men's game at, say, Queen's Club, where best of 3 wins).

Well, the radio commentary got so exciting I switched to the tv (if I understood games, sets, deuces, aces, et al, I'd be able to follow it better)

But, hey - someone phone the takeaway for a barrel of sushi!!

The BBC was so excited you get an Error 404 - Page Not Found message on the relevant news page.
