    "Mayflower Pilgrims" in Southampton tomorrow

Yesterday I was lucky enough to hear Clive Jenkins talk about his cantata, which will be performed tomorrow at Freemantle church in our city.

It promises to be a real treat.

I think some of you may have heard the Plymouth performance?

Oh I thought some descendants had returned to Britain.

I'd like to hear that. When music firms crashed I did temp work and onejob was on the Mayflower project in the 1950s, working for Lieut Comm. K. Winslow, RN retired, whose ancestor was on the original ship, of course.

Great fun and a couple of days on the stand at Earls Court I think. Let's have a report on the work please?

I'll do my best, saly, which will be decidedly amateurish....Clive played some extracts on Thursday and there were eminently singable bits, including a brilliant new tune for "To be a pilgrim".

Don't worry about it greenilex, I just wondered what made the composer pick on the Mayflower story?

        Anyway,I hope you enjoyed it.

I believe the work was commissioned to accompany the launch of a replica from Plymouth in 2005. The launch never took place, but the cantata was premiered in the same church the pilgrims used before setting sail.

I did enjoy the evening a great deal, and the venue was packed. I understand why the work would be a popular choice.

Thanks,it must be 50 years before that [1955] when I had that little contact with the Mayflower.

Good to hear that you enjoyed it, and that there was a good turnout , Greeny.

Be nice to hear it some time.
