Those who heard John Amis's reminiscences on R3 a while ago will recall that he performed such an experiment in the studio with distinguished musicians including Pinchas Zukerman. Zukerman completely failed to distinguish between a Strad and a cheap mass-produced instrument. He was not amused and apparently never spoke to JA again.
