Unfortunately, it took time for me to write this particular post, as on Wednesday just gone at 9.20pm, my father passed away, in his sleep, after a protracted illness. he was 96 years old, God Bless him! RIP

Commiserations bbm. Don't be surprised/ embarrassed if you feel relief rather than 'proper' grief at first, if it's been a long stressful time for you. Plenty of time for grief later

            My sympathy, BBM.
My father in law died last summer, aged 90, Bladder Cancer. He died at home, very much in possession of his faculties until the very end, cared for by his family, including many Medical professionals. I think there is a tendency for both Professionals and non Professionals to view someone has lived that long with an air of "Well, what can we expect at that age?" and of course it is different if the person has been suffering from something severely debilitating like prolonged dementia, but when they are functioning seniors we still somehow are just not ready to let them go.

... too many of our friends are in the process of dying at the moment.

Mme v is reading Atul Gawande "Being Mortal" and Sherwin Nuland "How We Die". Both recommended.

                  Commiserations and best wishes, BBM.

Having lost both of my parents within the past 18 months, I can well understand the strange mix of emotions that you will be feeling right now.

Indeed. I found that planning the music for the funeral service around our common tastes in music helped remind me of the few things my father and I had in common, if that helps, BBM.

Thank you everyone for your best wishes.

I found that since my father died, I only played the Chaconne from Partita No.2 for solo violin, by JSB. Since then I havn't been able to bring myself to hear music. I was like this when my younger son and a nephew of mine passed away as well.

I was exactly the opposite, BBM. The Verdi Requiem was in the CD player the night of the same day my father passed away. It helps to keep in mind that all of the great composers went through just the same feelings as the rest of us. It makes them, and their music, just that much closer to us.

I have not listened to any music on Radio3 since April 28th.

Maybe by the time the Proms start? I'm not sure.
