    ... yes, I disagree.

I don't find this the kind of place I want to be in at the moment.

I rather hope that he's enjoying life doing something he values more than coming back to this board - though I would welcome his return.

I note this though, from the quoted post:

Last month marked the 10th Anniversary of my joining the BBC Messageboards. I joined at a time after my partner had spent a year undergoing treatment for Cancer, which was pronounced "sorted" - the relief had an unusual effect on me ... I found that I couldn't read novels for a long time (Eco and then Proust got me back in the habit), and sharing ideas with people on the Messageboards was a great form of therapy.
The reference to problems and how the messageboards have helped in one person's situation can be extended to others.

Many people have had more problems than usual during the last three or four months. Some have had problems where they had no problems that concerned them before, and some have just carried on. Some may not have realised they had problems ....

A degree of tolerance - perhaps more than usual - might be required at present, as we don't know how individuals are actually feeling. I'm not suggesting that we should lower our standards - if we can decide what they are - but rather that rushing to judgement, or banning or otherwise taking action against others without letting them know of concerns should not be the way forward. Also we shouldn't all jump on a bandwagon which then disadvantages someone who may have initially at any rate not have caused any significant disquiet.

I note also that fhg left the keys to the washroom just before the urgency and importance of washing hands was impressed on us. I do hope he stocked up with soap!

On one point: 'french frank' has not returned. I loom as the co-founder and technical 'owner' of the forum and regret the recent problems that appear to have swept over the community. I have been given some further information which inclines me to suggest that the member in question be released with a 'caution'. (Premoderation, as I indicated earlier, does include suspension of all member privileges including private messaging).

My view is that the rules safeguard the community. If anyone feels that, on the contrary, they imprison - then don't sign up to them. Don't join. Leave. When everyone keeps to the rules we have a community, and those who break the rules fracture the community.

The penultimate complaint received involved one particular member, the moderators considered the complaint, agreed and took action. The 'victim' silently accepted the 'limitation to his free speech' and circumvented the problem to the satisfaction of the moderators and complainant.

The rules state that when a complaint is received the Moderators' decision will be final. That is what every member has signed up to on posting here, and that has been the position since the beginning. There has been no change.

But we have to point out that the forum, for better or worse, remains attached to the Friends of Radio 3 website, and we have an interest in protecting our reputation as we see fit; and protecting the interests of the members who have joined the forum for its primary purpose: Radio 3 programming and subjects which are associated with Radio 3 programming. When that is extended beyond what can reasonably be included under that heading, corrective action is justified - in the interests of the community. It is NOT in the interests of the community to shut the forum down because we feel it is not in OUR (Friends of Radio 3's) interests to retain it. But we reserve the right to do so if we feel pressed to.

It's just like coronavirus: in the interests of the community, please respect the rules.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

ff.... the 'people' who make this forum tick over and have the 'interest' [in the form of creating threads and posts] are the 'people' who are contributing - right at this moment. May I stop now and pay high tribute to Mark and Andrew and yourself for HUGE input over technical matters and nous. Thankyou , thank you. There will be no thread without the constant contributors....the watchers, the 5 posts in 10 years posters [and there are very many], the lurkers are not the forum....they are just people who put their name on an application form in my view, and have over executive propriety notions. Lighten up!!....if as it seems certain "owners", and Hosts, Senior Hosts are fed up with the Forum....then please hand it over in some way rather than saying - if you don't like it LUMP IT folk....LEAVE...

Eighth, I've been tied up with this problem for three days and have to confess I'm baffled. The forum has been running for 10 years now, during which time members have complained about posts, offending posts have been removed, and life goes on as normal. A post is removed, the poster complains that free speech is being curtailed and leaves in anger and suddenly everyone takes sides against the moderation decision. Why now? Why not on the thousands of other occasions?

A few months back when we (FoR3) wanted to hand over the forum to members, there were lengthy discussions with the Hosts as to how it could be managed. It's a question of who wants to take over. Who will take over upgrading the software with a new licence holder (and pay for it)? Who will arrange for the forum to switch to another server, away from the Friends of Radio 3 server? Who will supervise the collection of subscriptions and payments?

If you get a group together to do it, you can have the forum. Now that FoR3 has ceased to be active, it has no use for a forum. Organise yourselves and it's all yours.

Further thought: Or just start your own forum, like r3ok

Yes, because it all got stuck in the pipeline, before we could put any proposals to members. You were stuck with us and we were stuck with you.
