I've now responded to Mario about what I know, but I'm not sure that it's appropriate to discuss individuals on the open forum.

Moderation here is intended simply to ensure that the community continues to interact in a trouble-free atmostphere - notwithstanding the genuine disagreements and differences of opinion which do - and must - occur regularly. Some continued behaviour is simply disruptive. My understanding is that LMcD had some sort of grievance which was not specified or explained to moderators, and no longer wishes to participate.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Thank you: my apologies for my previous incorrect post.

I hope I don't sound too pompous if I point out that the people who run this forum give up their own time to do so, without financial remuneration. Their decisions are often based on more information than we (i.e. individual members) have to hand and they also need to bear in mind the reputation of this Forum as a whole.

I have received a personal communication from Mr Barrett in which he lays out his reasons for withdrawing from this Forum, having had 2 threads he initiated closed in quick succession. I will not quote his remarks re recent moderation decisions but they basically concur with my own impression.

A double blow at least then, what with the death of his mother in the past few days. He will be greatly missed by a number of us here.

It is now clear that both former contributors who recently withdrew, did so not as a result of having their membership cancelled but in response to the removal of some of their contributions. I have been made aware that others are considering whether they too should withdraw, citing similar concerns. It is said that "one volunteer is worth ten pressed men". Back when this Forum was set up in response to the termination of the BBC's own Radio 3 forum, another, R3OK was also set up. That became subject to innumerable invasions by spam-mongers and eventually closed. However, while running, it was funded by voluntary contributions from its members and its moderation team of three was elected from those proposed and seconded by the other members, from time to time. I will leave it at that.

The forum is not a prison. Members are free to leave for whatever reasons they wish.

In response to Bryn's last: the fact that this forum has not suffered 'invasions by spam mongers' is at least partially due to the vigilance of the moderation team removing posts, more often identifying and banning spammers before they even get to post. I know members do get angry at times, but they do so for diametrically opposite reasons (and more often with each other than with the moderators). Complaints that are regularly received would be vehemently countered by other members if they knew about them. There is no way that all members will remain happy when disputes are settled by moderation, and the 'explosions' over moderating decisions are remarkably rare here. If people have complaints, they do know who to contact.

This forum is simply too invaluable for me to ever consider withdrawing...

unless of course I'm told to *** off...

Agreed. I am saddened when things get too fraught and people leave, and irritated when a thread gets hijacked by heated argument, but choose to " leave the room" until it calms down, and let the mods deal, if necessary.

I don't enjoy "mixing it" with fellow posters whenever arguments take on a personal character. This forum has as one of its contributers' commonest complaints the dilution of Radio 3 from having once been an emblem of constructive discussion and beacon of authority. What does sadden me is that it often turns out to be the people who bring the most stimulating and searching ideas to the forum as a counter to such slippage in standards - whether it be in discussing films, novels, poetry, music or politics - who feel most compelled to leave.

Well said (apart from the errant "e" contribution).
