Cracking down on middle lane hoggers...

    Hurrah, I say...

Motorway tailgaters and middle-lane hoggers are to face quick justice with on-the-spot penalties under new measures announced by the government.

Every time I use motorways I am amazed by the thoughtless who potter along in the centre lane, effectively reducing the motorway's width to two lanes.

There are more dangerous things (nutters who overtake at speed on the left - or rather, 'under'-take - being one thing) but if people kept to the left-hand lane where possible, the entire process of motorway driving would be improved.

Having done a couple of such journeys in the last couple of weeks, there's no doubt that aggressive, thoughtless and bullying driving is on the increase.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Then I am glad no longer to own a car if that is the case!

Many years ago I was driving along the clockwise section of the M25 between the Dartford Bridge and the junction with the M2. Having planned sufficient time for a 30 mile journey to avoid stress, we had agreed not to exceed 60 mph and as much as possible adhere to the left hand lane. Much to our surprise, we came across a line of cars in the middle lane doing 30 mph. I eased our way to the front of the queue, undertaking with some trepidation. Leading the "queue" was an elderly lady, driving an invalid carriage!!! "You can imagine what she would say on being escorted off the motorway by the police", Dad commented, "'Look here young man, as an Englishwoman we didn't win the war to be told I have no right to drive wherever I want at whatever speed I want!'"

I hope they've got enough police to dish out all these new fines - hopefully the income will help clear the deficit

does "inappropriate speed" mean breaking the speed limit ?

No, you've got it wrong. The fekking morons that stick in the middle lane of the M6, M25 & M1 at 69.9MPH are a real danger to lives. Choose a different subject to 'Rock Against The State' about.

must be because i rarely drive on motorways these days, whenever i do the lh lane seems perpetually stuffed with lorries ....

... when you get annoyed at the cars in front do you feel that you have sufficient cognitive resource available to notice if the lh lane is actually empty? [if not, why are you raging, and in either case what are you doing in the middle lane?] in the usa there is no such lane customs or regulation, seems just as awful an experience as here ... the real difficulty is always always traffic volume ... fume away if you want, but 30% fewer cars is what you really want ...
