    A Musican in the Family

    No ! not me !

I've been scraping & sawing away at my 'cello & bass viol for years & ( luckily ) no one has noticed, although Bach will have turned over a few thousand times, especially should I dare tackle even a single bar of suite no. 6 !

Now, suddenly, we have a musician in the family. So important ( ? ) is this strange occurence that he ( my youngest son & young no more ) is suddenly known to strangers, neighbours, relatives & others through the weird digital goings-on called, Twitter, Facebook & other strange other-worldly organisations. They are choking my computer ! Apparently, he has been a member of a strange looking ( & sounding ) group of people known as ' Voodoo Six ' without any trouble for several years. Now, this group has become the support group for another collection of wild looking people (?) called ' Iron Maiden ' & are at present circulating throughout Europe & the Middle East, a different city each night with audiences of astronomical proportions & paying the most incredible prices.

And I thought that by reaching the age of 90 I would be safe from further mental disturbance - not so !

He'll be making a fortune - a portion of which can provide me with something made of fine woods in Cremona round about the 1700's - then perhaps I'll forgive him !! Well, it's worth a try !!

Well done him, gamba. Just one thing - I hope he's taking care of his hearing. Noise-induced hearing loss a big problem for rock musicians especially hanging out with the likes of Iron Maiden

And we don't even have a photo of you gamba, to look for a likeness.

Well,he's successful at something he likes doing, and it pays. You must be proud of him.

Thank you Richard although he never heard anything I had to say to him when he was young.

Actually, he supplied ME with earplugs so I could get some sleep during hospital visits - good lad !

My son, offspring of a horn player and a distinguished violinist, taught himself to play guitar and is now lead guitarist in a heavy metal rock band.

Their name? Beyond Belief. I couldn't have put it better myself!

BTW I don't know about hearing loss, but he never seems to heed anything that I tell him.

When my son was in a metal band, (Metal is louder and more raucous than heavy Metal BTW !) i spent a lot of time at metal gigs one way or another.

A more supportive musical community is hard to imagine. About 30% of the audience seem to be members of other bands.

His band made it as far as a gig in Camden and a single play of a song from their self produced CD on Radio Wiltshire.

I thought they were brilliant ! Very proud of the record they made.

Anyway Good luck to Voodoo Six, hope they get the breaks they deserve.

Gamba: I thought this tune might combine your interests in cello, Classical, and Heavy Metal. Enjoy. I think they are terrific !!

My mother was a very fine pianist, who gained her LRAM in 1926. Herbert Howells was on the adjudication panel: by coincidence, he is related to our family through marriage, as I mentioned elsewhere - or, rather, semi-coincidence, given that it would be another 11 years before she and my dad would meet up. I haven't the heart to throw away all her college papers, though she passed away in 1985, asged 80. She had her own Saltburn Ladies' Orchestra - I have some newspaper clippings on concerts they did - and once told me that she did a broadcast for the BBC wireless. After marrying she gave up playing professionally, and, sadly, never again took it up, though she did a bit of teaching, and would wheel out the Chopin, Brahms and Schumann miniatures she excelled in performing for visiting friends. She actually told me, once, that she did not enjoy playing - which, to me, who loves playing but is no good at it because I was too damn lazy as a child to learn my scales - seems odd; but the impression I gleaned is that once her talent was discovered at a young age, her parents used her as a showcase to display family status. Really sad.
