Seconded. I believe I have enthused about them (and linked to that site) on the Stormy Weather thread before now (I remember saly commenting about it). My velocipede is never shod in anything else.

I popped a pair Marathon Winters on last November and they got me in and out of work safely, even when the roads were sheet ice. You can also cycle on them when the roads are in a normal condition, although there is little a bit more rolling resistance, and they make a sound rather like Rice Krispies, which does at least warn pedestrians that you are approaching.

If you need to cycle in the winter, they're worth getting. I'll put them back on in about October and leave them on until the Spring. Last winter I took them off in late February thinking that was it for snow and ice and then had to put them back on about a week later.

(By the way, one inevitably loses a few of the spikes as time goes on. I sent a quick email to Schwalbe mentioning the fact and they sent me a bag of about 100 spares, no charge! )

On the tyre debate, I went with Continental's Gatorskins. It was a £32 per tyre so pretty expensive but it seemed to be a good investment, especially given the number of punctures experienced by the group which was about 8/10 across the four days, while I was puncture free and pressure tight across the four days.

I loved that anecdote earlier about pumping the tyres to just 30 Lbs psi.

Even if the manufacturer suggests 90, I'm happier taking it up to 110. At least.

Still a little punch drunk and exhausted by the whole affair. I was at a networking event tonight where I was stood for about three hours and it now looks as if I have elephantitis.

Easy day for me tomorrow.
