    London to Paris By Bike

I've just gone London to Paris by bike in four days. 400kms in total.

And the toughest part of it ... the final two hours getting into Paris!

    Well, I'm just saying!

May I ask why? Were you sponsored? Was it a condition of probation?

At my book group last night one of the members told us about a cycle ride from the Himalayas to - I forget where (). The group she was with were helped at one point by a more expert cyclist, who encouraged them by shouting "Use your arse!". She discovered that clenching the buttocks did help her to put more 'oomph' into the pedaling.

I like the idea of something called 'Bodyglide'

I think someone should do a test. I always carried a banana when I cycled; very good for filling those sudden energy dips, but what to do with the skin after I'd eaten the banana was a puzzle.

To be serious for a minute, you do need a lubricant if you are going to be in the saddle for any length of time. Otherwise you will find yourself spending most of your time out of the saddle, if you get my drift. Never tried bananas but Assos (sic) chammy cream does wonders, as do padded shorts.

One surprising remedy for saddlesore is acne cream (the benzoyl peroxide being the active ingredient) which really zaps the zits.

But many congratulations on your successful ride to the land of the cheese-eating surrender monkeys, SHB. I am most impressed. How was the weather- was the wind with you or against you?

So the successful cyclist needs beans as well as bananas?
