Jonathan Mills, the current director, was born in Sydney & previously directed the Melbourne Festival. Australia's obviously the place to go to get a festival director!

Perhaps they misunderstood when somebody told them it was only 30 miles from Perth?

Wasn't that the old SDP tale of one of their early consultative conferences being scheduled for Perth and a gopher having to hare over to Heathrow to prevent Shirley Williams from getting on a plane that was Antipodes-bound?

This gentleman, Mr Linehan, has a background in theatre and has been responsible for bringing such luminaries as Elvis Costello and Grace Jones to Sydney. He has no discernible connection with classical music whatever which, last time I looked, was a major component of the Edinburgh International Festival. So why are people welcoming his appointment? What credibility will he have discussing programmes with orchestra managements and conductors - assuming, that is, that he intends to have orchestral music to the same extent?

Jonathan Mills has been a gimmicky disaster. Why go back for more?!
