As an undergraduate working as a courier with young Americans in Europe I caused gasps of astonishment from a coachload of these teenagers by calling to my female English colleague 'Shall I come and knock you up tomorrow?'.

In Thatcher's case the diagnosis was indeed Dupuytren's contracture. "A Doctor" was quoted in Private Eye as asserting that the condition was invariably associated with advanced dipsomania. Surely Thatcher's strict Methodist upbringing would have ruled this out?

Thanks Dave. Just to pour a little oil on troubled waters, I was fascinating to hear that Mrs T asked for Wordsworth's Immortality Ode to be read at the funeral.
So, she asked for one of the most profound poems in the English language. Perhaps that reveals a different side.

Or perhaps it was a warning (or promise, to be even-handed)?
