As it happens I'm currently working with a student who's been studying the work of that composer so I know exactly what it is...

Well, all I can say is that the Grade V sight-reading tests have grown harder since the days when I did them!

Anyway: it's not a piano part from a larger piece, it's from a piece for solo piano. Do you give up yet?
Yep; I'm going to have to - it's not a work I know. Yet.

Is it for a bowed string instrument? (Some of the symbols look like "bow tailpiece" indications.)

(which is a trochaic rhythm, of course).

Looks like spooky the alien reading a book, to me.

                  In E major, probably.

                        The instrumentation isn't specific
                        but they aren't bowing marks

Do you need a Great Learning to know the composer, then?

                              A good guess
                              but sadly not

(I had thought of posting that but then Bryn )

In fact it's a new piano piece written for Nicolas Hodges called Quirl and subtitled "Study in self-similar rhythms". The premiere was announced a couple of years ago but it's only just been finished.
