I see the Alphabet Association team are out in force on this one.

Make a rash guess that this is a total serial work both in tempo and dynamics. But if Boulez and Ferneyhough are discounted, then I think we need a clue?

Nobody has yet been discounted apart from me and Asterix's dog, and actually nobody has yet suggested Ferneyhough.

Not something Beecham trod in, is it?

Congratulations on making the 1000th citation on the Radio 3 Forum of that particular mauvais mot. No, it isn't Stockhausen, though it's clearly influenced by his Klavierstücke I-IV.

Well, I have actually discounted Ferneyhough and Finnissy, as well as Downie, Boulez, Messiaen and the two other frivolous suggestions, but I still have to admit defeat on this one.

Ok, despite ahinton's view, let me make another rash guess that it is Ferneyhough, and one of his piano works:
PIANO: Epigrams, 1966; Sonata for Two Pianos, 1966; Three Pieces, 1966–67; Lemma-Icon-Epigram, 1981; Opus Contra Naturam (pianist also speaks), 1999–2000 (scene 4 of Shadowtime; may be performed separately as a concert work)

But not Lemma Icon Epigram - that has every time signature under the sun apart from 5/32 etc

Absolutely correct! although it isn't any of the pieces on your list. I was wondering whether a certain Ferneyhough admirer among members not currently present might be able to identify it precisely...

I give up then - my series of rash guesses show that Opus Contra Naturam has some of these strange time signatures - but not the exact phrase.

Well, as a wild guess - given the title of this thread - it's Ferneyhough's Funerailles!!
                      But that's not piano ....
                      Edit: I bet Bryn knows!

I don't know. I didn't know Ferneyhough had ever used the inter-staff barlines as seen here. As it's not handwritten, it must be post 2000; are you teasing us with a new work for piano? (I presume it's for piano, owing to the lovely synchronized scrunch in bar two?) But it's not a work I know! (Retires in humiliation and changes name to Ferneyhoughvaguelyaware.)

There is a decent competition to be had for a new and appropriate (and respectful!) name for the MB member who posted #552 in this thread I feel......
