I don't know what Pol Pot thought of Elgar but I did have the impression that you don't much care for anything of his (Elgar's, that is - not Pol Pot's); maybe I'm wrong about that...

I don't either. If Mr GG's posse comes round, just call on me for help.

Is Dougal standing by as back-up, Flossie?

Yes - he'll lick them to death (which isn't as funny as it might sound, given where his tongue has usually been)

I've learned more about music from this forum than from any textbook.
ER: You know more about British music than I ever will do. Your posts on RVW and others have shone a light in a dark corner of the repertoire for me for which much thanks. We are not all as knowledgeable as we like to think and we all learn from each other. That's one of the great things about this forum and no-one should feel excluded from posting on musical matters for the reasons you give.

If you want to know which Beethoven 5 to get but are afraid to ask, just ask anyway, you could be amazed at what you will learn.
The first rising interval of the horn theme (Swan Hymn) in the last movement of Sibelius 5 is not the same as a rissole. Mind you, neither are the next 3 or so rising leaps, which are not the same as rising 5ths. Page 15 John Richard Norine Univ. of Texas PhD - http://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/...ssertation.pdf

More responses of that kind and I shall go catatonic.

Or perhaps I'll go and have a gin and tonic - although I'll have to try to forget the of late much-discussed consumer of that beverage when so doing...

Yes, but we don't have to be dogmatic about it.

                              Hear hear!!!

(To be controversial I was going to add that RVW will be rolling in his grave for anyone disliking Sibelius, but I've decided not to .)

That's very kind of you to say so Petrushka but I wouldn't class myself as any sort of expert on British music, just obsessively potty about the stuff.
If that pottiness encourages others to investigate then I am very happy.

I should warn you though that I am becoming increasingly obsessed with neglected Russian symphonies,so you might find yourself listening to Miaskovsky very soon.
