To refer to the late, great, Robert Simpson, I don't know the difference between a rising 5th and a rissole; but it does not stop me marching seriously towards musical discussions, with an ill-advised confidence and joining in; even though contributors include professional musicians, composers, experts and similar such as MrGG, ahinton, suffolkcoastal, fernie, Bryn et al.

That's the beauty of this place. The shame is that sometimes we let the child in us spoil it a bit (and the adult malady of holding a grudge).

I don't know the difference between a rising 5th and a rissole either and would urge anyone who feels afraid to post (all those 'guests'?) to just go ahead and do it anyway. If you want to know which Beethoven 5 to get but are afraid to ask, just ask anyway, you could be amazed at what you will learn.

I'm as guilty as anyone else as only reading the dedicated music threads but not venturing an opinion as to which string quartet's rendition of this is better than that. There is so much knowledge here it's sometimes intimidating (wrong word, offputting perhaps?) Anyway, it's running the risk of being classed as a musical duffer (cloth-ears!) by admitting I like Norrington over Barbarolli!! As my end of term reports so often said "could try harder" and I should follow that maxim in future.

Now THAT could start an argument.....

I'll start the argument if you like,NONE.

Seriously though I think I am probably the least musically knowledgable on here and was very loathe to post on musical matters at one time.
I was put off by the fact that there are people on here who teach, write and play music (some professionaly I gather)but feel I am getting a bit braver now.
I've learned more about music from this forum than from any textbook.

It's interesting how some peoples reaction to folk saying things they don't like

often in a pub they don't even have to go to as there's a big sign in a Python style (come for an argument) over the door saying

                "Ye Hostelry of Endless Bickering,
                Monday night : Fight Club
                Tuesday: Vegan Anarcho punk night
                Wednesday: Foxhunting discussion evening
                Thursday: HIPP vibrato discussion evening
Friday: Sausage cookery with the Chief Rabbi and a member of the Saudi Royal Family
Saturday: Andre Rieu appreciation society (sponsored by Radio 3)
Sunday: God is dead disco with DJ Dawkins "

Peoples reaction is to make more and more rules
and try to police what people are allowed to say
by all means disallow foul language and threats

BUT if you don't want to read about cricket then don't take out a subscription to Wisden

Far too naughty for that (although I suspect Des could be a bit naughty too; he always seems (seemed?) to have a wicked twinkle in his eye)
