    What's the smell of parsley?

    Oh, my dead dears!

And that, I think, should signal the death of this thread.

Not, I'm sure, that there's anything wrong with Home Counties golf-clubs. Just in case you happen to be a member of one. Or anyone else might happen to be a member of one. Or know someone who is a member of one. Or know someone who knows someone who is a member of one. Or knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who is a member of one.
JS, I don't know what a Home Counties golf-club is like, but I can guess that it could have something to do with 'toffs-in-tweeds', or similar stereotype. Let me invite you to a round in my golf-club - not a tweed in sight, nor a toff, as far as I know, but a darned tricky little course with views of the Hills of Donegal, Inch Island (an Irish tautology!) and the Lough known as the Lake of Shadows.
Let me add that I remember you quite well from a previous existence on the old message boards. You were always Julien Sorel, but I was PatrickOD - I changed my name to Padraig because I've taken up Irish for my sins and I'm trying to impress people. Yes, I particularly remember being mightily influenced by your musical choices and your recommendations. I can't recall them all now, but never far from my hand are two favourite discs that you suggested and which I value highly - Pavel Haas Quartet, Janacek String Quartet No 2, Intimate Letters; and Leipziger Streichquartett, Christiane Oelze, Schoenberg String Quartet No 2. I was hoping that you might get round to joining in some music discussions, and a few more pearls might come my way.

Because you feel that there's Llareggub left to be said on it, is it? And do we therefore sacrifice "I lost my step in Nantucket" for "I left my heart in San Francisco"?...

Quite likely! Although I could say more!! But I will not, in the interest of peace and harmony and the preservation of this forum.

Yes, I remember! That's very kind of you to say that . Do you know Zemlinsky's string quartets? If you don't I think you'd enjoy them a lot http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zemlinsky-St...linsky+quartet

Now Monsieur Sorel, excuse me coming over all Hostly, but that really does call for a new thread under 'Talking about Music'...

                Glad you're sticking around!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                  True. Sackcloth and ashes!

Of course, when I said johnny-come-lately I meant "johnny-come-lately". Schoolboy error not to appreciate the signifcance of a set of quotation marks, and to fail to predict the capital some would make of that omission.

For clarification purposes, I have no interest in "outing" anyone; merely to state that, IMV, longevity of membership should be disregarded as a criteria for judging the merit of any view expressed here, as it is clearly impossible to know how long members have been posting here or on the old BBC boards, given the frequent changes of identity which some members adopt.

Hurrah! You know, us old guard, we are a really nice lot. Some of us changed identity because of some eejits and (forgive me, I quote "grammer school oiks") disrespecting.

I know you all are (well, most of you)! That's the difficulty when making any general point, that you are bound to offend someone, so my apologies for coming across earlier as a "golf club twit". My only wish is that a higher percentage of forum members actually would post on a more frequent basis, and particularly on Radio 3 and music/arts related subjects.

Don't apologise. Work at getting your handicap down.

PS What is it with these jibes at golfers?
