That wasn't the issue I was responding to (& actually threads about R3 programming &/or strategy have got pretty rancorous, if I remember rightly - & just take a look at the 'Choir' forum ).

As for asking the 95% of non-posters what they think, they have plenty of opportunity to say. Someone (you?) could start a thread. But as a previous poster (sorry, can't remember who) said or suggested it is quite normal for this type of forum, or for any organisation, not to join in or initiate a discussion but to leave it to others. (I'm a member of an artists' collective, & have been a member of other organisations, where the majority are happy to leave it to others to initiate any activity).

Here, here, Sydney. I have in the past said as much myself and recommended that all comments are directed to the 'Chair' and, as you suggested, posters avoid speaking one to another, especially when the only tone they are capable of, apparently, is the rancourous.

It seems to me that policing all that effectively would involve a heck of a lot of work for FF....

I told myself to stay clear. And here I am ignoring myself.

If this message board in its current form adversely affects For3's campaign than For3 shouldn't be expected to maintain the message board. So For3 needs to take a long look at what For3 wants. As a For3 member (though not an active one, I'm afraid) that matters to me.

I think it's grossly unfair that french frank should be expected (which does seem to be the case - one member a few weeks ago breezily observed something along the lines of 'any chance Admin could sort this out?') to devote so much of her time and energy to this message board. And to be put in positions where whatever she does she's wrong. In this case I think ff needs positive encouragement to put herself first.

Maybe the politics put a silent majority off (though they are generally confined and it isn't necessary to look at them. I don't read the British and Commonwealth composer thread. Whoops ). Maybe people just generally don't post. Or post very often. I find Dave2002's #137 very persuasive (I think it very likely reflects the reality). I suspect a more constricted set of fora might be slightly dull and repetitious in parts, at least. Or I'd find it that way, which is of course the problem. Separating out the personal.

I read (lurk) at the Jazz board more than I look at most of the classical threads. I don't feel put-off by any sense the group are cliquish. I feel slightly uneasy that my knowledge is too patchy to contribute usefully. My suspicion is that applies more generally with silent members.

I'd be interested (and would contribute to) a thread on what members of this message board would like Radio 3 to be if they don't like what it is now. I have a strong suspicion umbrage would be taken, though.

I 'lurked' for a while before dipping a tentative toe into the Forum waters. Now look at me!

Perhaps we should ban everyone from posting and preserve the Forum in the amber of the aether, hanging in the Noƶsphere, blowing in electronic winds, to serve as a warning of what happens when different minds meet across the vast digital plains...or something.

I think that debate should be conducted as politely as possible and using terms such as " grow up" is unnecessary.

I feel everyone has had their say about Mrs Thatcher . I think people should have respected FF's decision to close those threads and not started up another .

The thread was already in action a couple of days B, we are using it now because it is convenient (but I see every reason for it to be split where this new debate started and renamed....

Yes B, another good one is " You obviously know absolutely nothing about THAT which you write" or words to that effect....

we are right now right here and on every other thread is my understanding ... non contribution is an active choice.... i see no signs of suppression oppression etc ...
