I suppose I might give the Karajan a spin (£4.99 from Oxfam, but with no booklet). However, I have just ordered the Kubelik (£25,46 incl. p&p, "Used - Very Good" via amazon.co.uk), so might wait for that.

          Quite expensive, then!

Some years ago it was £16.50 new but it was down my list. When I came to buy it, it had gone up to £35!

Bryn seems to have got a bargain.

Just been advised that Opera Depot are offering all but one of their Parsifal downloads at 50% discount for a few days. The one exception is a 1973 Horenstein, which is free.

Thanks for posting these links, it's fascinating to listen to the audio samples of the many recordings available.

Should I have another look at "Parsifal", a film by Hans Juergen Syberberg - or maybe that doesn't count?

The Kubelik arrived today. As I opened the package I heard a tiny thump from the carpet. Sure enough there was a small black plastic triangle resting on the pile. Protruding from the triangle was a cylindrical boss. One of the 4-disc jewel case hinges had broken off in transit. Good job I heard the thing fall. A dab of polystyrene cement and all is well. Now to find time to test the content of the polycarbonate discs. They make a point of mentioning that the recording has been remastered at 24 bit 96kHz resolution. What they fail to mention is the digital resolution used for the original May 1980 recording. Hardly likely to be higher than 16/48 I would have though, and quite possibly rather lower.

Now seems to be a version by Sawallisch. Never heard of Opera Depot before - but will investigate, and I might even listen to the free Parsifal - or bits of it!
