Which Parsifal will you play this weekend? There are no wrong answers!

Oh dear, thanks for reminding me that as a devoted Wagnerian, I should be playing 'Parsifal' in the next couple of days. I have three versions on LP, Kna 1951, Kna 1964 and Solti 1973, but I would always turn to the Karajan version on DG as a first choice. In fact, I will now start on the CDs of that version, if you dont hear from me for the next four or five hours, I'm communing with Wagner.

There probably is at least one version somewhere here, in a box set, but I have no intention of playing it in a hurry, and certainly not this weekend. Sorry to the Wagnerites around.

I've just downloaded the Tribune des Critiques podcast of Act 3 for my 5-day holiday coming up tomorrow; I normally then investigate the versions that I like on Spotify or Qobuz, so I'll wait and see...

I was expecting Parsifal chunks from R3 but no play and its a bit late now for Good Friday music. My turntable being hors de combat I have only Spotify if I feel the need - don't at the moment my ear being preoccupied with Nina Simone's version of Strange Fruit (arr. Butterworth) and Better Luck Next Time (I Berlin) which also has the virtue of being timely.

Not having listened to Parsifal in a while, returning to it in this pacey, direct performance makes a refreshing change from my usual Goodall, Knappertsbusch, Karajan go-to recordings.

Friday evening I listened to Act III from the Thielman/Domingo recording. Not sure that I like Domingo in the role, & he's certainly too old to be convincing on stage - there's no way he could have enough make-up to look youthfull enough for Act I.

I would have chosen Knappertsbusch/Windgassen 1951 performnace from Bayreuth, but the prelude is on one CD & the rest of the act on another, & I didn't want to jump up after a few minutes to change CDs. I don't know why the whole act couldn't have been fitted on one CD, since CD 3 is 78 minutes long and CD 4 76 minutes.
