Littlejohn is awful, Philips is occasionally sound but unattractive; Heffer is an undiluted joy.

Are you saying that Heffer is both sound and attractive?

His biography of Enoch Powell, 'Like The Roman', is excellent and doesn't suffer (well, not too much) from the author's personal friendship with the subject. His book on Vaughan Williams is also supposed to be good, I hear; and I always enjoy his polemical articles. As a commentator, he suffers only in comparison to Paul Johnson, probably because SH was right-wing 'from the womb'.
