I laughed out loud several times just now listening to Beethoven's Eroica Variations in a recently acquired version by Annie Fischer. Eg during variation XIII I could clearly envisage the great man enjoying himself thumping away at those comically repeated chords.

Gives me the chance to ask The Edge how he enjoyed the Antheil concert last Wednesday?

Unfamiliar territory for me Antheil,are you a fan Alison ?
Interesting music,enjoyable as a one off listen,substantial Sibelius quote in the symphony but I couldnt tell you which work it's from,anyway I won't be rushing out to buy any cds.
I see they filled the time on the radio with recordings William Alwyn film music,wish they'd played some in the studio.
Can't believe it's been over a year since our last Sunday natter.

I've just as it happens been listening to to cassette I made from the Proms performance of Antheil's thrilling albeit manic Ballet Mécanique. No likelihood of finding any Sibelius quotes in that, I would think! - more likely Stravinsky's Les Noces, with its multiple pianos and percussion polyrhythms, although Antheil would have had only a year to have become acquainted with that particular work, which Stravinsky took so long before deciding on the final instrumentation. What is most striking is how prophetic this work is of Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, composed 13 years later; hard not to surmise Bartok must have known the Antheil piece.

Ok, ok rub it in! Just a touch over 18 months to go for my wind down period (Oct 2019 down to 4 days, Nov 3 days, Dec 2 days all on full pay) which is one of the few good things my employer does. Can't wait to hear all that music I'm missing. Frustrating to be forced to wait for 6 months after I'm 65.

Six months extra isn't so bad and it's had to be my own choice given the circumstances of not getting the state pension until Jan 2020. It will give me much greater financial stability to be able to afford all those boxed sets.
