As usual after the Proms have finished I have a mountain of unplayed newly purchased CDs to wade through. It's looking like the Himalayas in here at the moment. I found prices in London shops roughly on par with Amazon, in some cases better, and that suggests that either Amazon prices are lifting or shop prices are falling.

Has anyone been in the new Gramex shop lately near Waterloo station? There is a huge stock of second-hand CDs in there so fill yer boots!

It's been a tough old time lately with my mother's passing and things feel very strange at the moment but life goes on and music is always there. She really would have been most upset to have disrupted my Prom season had she known which mercifully she didn't.

My first concert of the new season: Bruckner 8 with Haitink and the LSO on October 23.

Yes.... I'm excited to be going to hear Volodos and Trifonov live this coming season, the former solo, the latter in Rach 3. Rich pickings for Rachmaninov fans in the coming LPO season

Sounds like you've been facing life very bravely Pet.

You never mention going to concerts locally? Is there still that concert hall in Hanley, the one with Havergal Brian associations ?

Yesterday we had outing to London which consisted of two very contrasting items: matinee of "My Night With Reg" at the Donmar, moving, very funny and brilliantly performed. Before heading for the hills we decided to have a meal and take in a Wigmore recital with Renata Pokupić and the redoubtable Roger Vignoles. Interesting programme: Wolf, Mahler/Rückert Lieder, then Finzi and Reynaldo Hahn most beautifully sung and put across. She has a most appealing presence and I certainly shall watch out for her in future. Over by 9.15 and we caught most of the Last Night second half as we steamed home down an empty M4.

Indeed. Several dates scribbled down for potential reviews. There's also a fair smattering of Rachmaninov in the coming LSO season.

Without proper broadband, but - fed up - have succumbed to BT Fon until Sky can finally get a working phone line installed in my new flat (hence my absence from these boards for the past few weeks). Gradually adjusting to London life - love the easy transport links and close proximity to opera houses and concert halls, but do miss Winchester!

Evening all,am I in time for last orders?

Been a glorious weekend weatherwise, but busy busy.
Daughter, and family house move has hit a minor blip,so they've moved in here for a couple of weeks, good job our house has elastic walls.

Yes you're being very brave Pet during a tough time.

I've never been to the Proms, now I feel like I've missed the glory years.
There have been some cracking concerts to be fair but the baggage that come with the season makes me cringe.

Looking forward to The English Concert,Harry Bicket et al in Bach B Minor at the end of Sept in Manchester.

You mean the Victoria Hall in Hanley. The Halle and BBCPO go there sometimes but nothing like as much as in the old days. Unfortunately, the lack of public transport after 9pm makes it impossible to go (or rather, come back) and in any case programmes are nowhere near as adventurous as in Loughran's Halle days when I was a regular.

The Victoria Hall was a great favourite of Barbirolli's who liked the excellent acoustics but, alas, I never saw him. Elgar was another visitor in his early days: his King Olaf op 30 had its first performance there in October 1896 at the North Staffordshire Music Festival under the baton of Elgar himself.

Has it moved Pet? I haven't been there for a couple of years - thanks for the tip!

I went in earlier in the year & they were talking about an iminent move - across the road & along a bit (I think I might have mentioned it at the time in the 'Bargains' thread). The plan was to borrow shopping trolleys from the supermarket across the road to move the stock, & remain open for sales during the process. I wish I'd been there to see it

Just poking my head into the snug to see if anyone is there...

Evening Sunday nighters everywhere. Been a lovely summer's day here today so after cleaning chores and lunch went out for a stroll. A pity that the day is so short and the nights now getting longer but good to make the most of the sunshine on offer today. I've a feeling it could be the last such weekend for quite a while.

                      People now talking about Christmas...

Evening Pet, I'm here too, just soaking up the last bits of the weekend. Glad you had a nice day, its been lovely here a well. Like you had a nice walk today, the Wiltshire countryside was gorgeous in the sunshine. Also managed to do a little bit of gentle DIY, never my favourite tasks !! Plenty of music listened to, and watched an interesting lecture on Youtube about Brittens SQ no 2. Excellent stuff.

Hoping to get to the RFH on Weds for some DSCH and Prokofiev, looking forward to that.

Well if she isn't now, she probably never will be !!

A shambles of epic proportions, ER, involving dodgy owners, unresponsive football officials, and a general lack of good sense.
