It's good to see the Kingdom on the First Night with Sir Andrew's presence adding a bit of tradition.

Just listening to a bit of last Mondays Gerontius before it drops off the I player.

The CBSO recording under Oramo is my latest cd purchase and will accompany me to work this week.

Perhaps I should acquire a Proms prospectus before making any further comment on the season.

TS, someone put up a brilliant analysis of Suk's Asrael Symphony on here some months ago and it's just what you need. I'll try and find it again as Asrael is a pretty tough nut to crack but worth it once cracked.

There are some good Proms and I won't have much trouble in attending my usual dozen or so. There are plenty of duff ones too which makes me think the season is too long as it looks too much like padding. At least, I'll have my senior railcard by then so travel costs will come down. Could do with some decent hotel deals to reduce even further.

EDIT This might be the one

Thanks Pet. Funnily enough i have been using that very one this evening, and it is a good road map in many ways. Thanks for looking it out. Surprisingly little to be found on the web about this extraordinary work.
I knoW JLW is a huge fan though.....

I"ll try to find the Beaux Arts Schumann, ER, thanks for the tip.

I don't really know the Schumann Piano Trios - or Violin Sonatas. Good steer.

Good heavens, Sir Andrew is sounding really quite involved in Gerontius! Bless him. Rather like pastoral guy on another thread I have given up listening to Elgar in recent years and a renaissance is well overdue. I remember playing Leonard Slatkins the Kingdom endlessly on first acquisition.

Perhaps like Pet I am looking forward to Josef Strauss' Sport Polka at the Proms.

Fine win Sainty. Thanks for all the Chelmsford City info Robbo.

I was present at the centenary performance in Birmingham on Oct 3 2000 with Oramo and the CBSO and very good it was too. Had it on tape at one time but it disappeared long ago. Never bought the recording as I'm satisfied with Boult and Barbirolli but perhaps I ought to seek it out.

Caliban was also waxing lyrical about the accompanying Enigma Variations.

You're very good with your dates, Pet!

I never forget a date, never forget a birthday or, indeed, dozens of obscure anniversaries of all kinds. People's jaws have been seen to drop when I come out with them even to knowing what the weather was on that day. I used to be able to tell what day of the week any given date was since 1970 and do so in seconds but haven't tested this for some time.

The real problem is that I can remember all this 'trivia' but can't remember the really important stuff which all too often goes in one ear and out the other!

Re the Schumann Piano Trios, they can be had for 7 and a half quid here,or downloaded for a fiver, plus you get the Quintet and Quartet.
I assume these are the same recordings that I have coupled with the Fantasiestucke in an earlier release.

Wonderful performance of Gerontius. Rarely has Sir Andrew sounded so inspired. I'm surprised this didn't attract more comment at the time. A live relay would have been far preferable to an outing on Easter Monday afternoon it must be said.

I really enjoyed this out of DoG as well! Like I have said before, I think Sir Andrew is probably the finest Elgar interpreter around1

Great feeling isn't it? Pity about the Monday evening depression yet to come.

No luck at the Guineas meeting this year (last year was a bonanza for me) but I still carry on getting the boxed sets without the wins.
