Big signing for your lot ! Pleased with Leicester City form so far.

    Perhaps you're at tonight's Prom !
Thought about tonight's 2 proms...but Thursday looks the one, fingers crossed.

City and Saints off to solid starts .....Hurrah !!

Saw the Shard on my way to Millwall just over a year ago......a rather odd juxraposition, to say the least.

Have you read the description of the ministry of Truth in 1984, re the Shard? very, very odd.........

she may not want to talk footy....stick to Bruckner and stuff is my advice.

And good evening Sunday Nighters. Back to work for me tomorrow..

Draw your own conclusions as to my prevailing mood......which is good, in the circumstances.

Hi there lads. Shoved a few quid on the Arsenal to beat Spurs so I am over the bitter disappointment of yesterday's reverse at the valley. A fellow Foxes fan told me that we had just signed someone from Southampton. Is Sainty able to elaborate ?

Since the LSO prom Ive had a right craze on Elgars Second. Have downloaded Oramo and awaiting Boult. Rarely comest thou etc .... How true is that !

ah, nice return on the Arsenal, Alison.

Foxes have signed Dean Hammond. Frankly, its a good move for Deano at this point in his career. He won't turn you into a top class outfit, BUT he will do a good job wherever you put him , great at closing games down, and a 110% player. A decent signing.
And he is quite brilliant at finding space at corners...

Oh Alison,I've had a right craze on Elgar 2 for about 35 years,it's a killer.
Can't tell you how much it means to me.

Evening all. As a counterpoint to Elgar and football, I thought the following might upset the... ummmm.... earnest atmosphere in the Political debate chamber, and might entertain here. I've seen things like it before, but it's nicely done. It was written apparently by John Cleese.

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved."

Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose."

The Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be right." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is cancelled." To date, no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

A final thought - "Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC".

                  Have a good week all.

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                    Elgar and football?
                    Bread and circuses?

Nice post, Cals. Welcome to the past indeed.

A quick search indicates that it wasn't (sadly) by Cleese and has been doing the rounds since 2005, updated every time there's some sort of conflict in the offing. Humorous and Pythonesque, nonetheless.

A lazy Sunday afternoon and evening here. In fact, Radio 3 has been on here since mid-afternoon. I enjoyed the 'Bear Hunt' family prom - surely a better way to draw young folk into classical than events like the Dr Who prom? - and stayed with it since. I rarely listen to Choral Evensong, but it featured Genesis Sixteen, one of whose number did a stint with us at work this summer. Greatly enjoying this evening's Prom, especially Janine Jansen's playing of the Britten Violin Concerto and the interval discussion. Now toying with the idea of purchasing Paul Kildea's Britten biography.

All of which has kept me from writing much at all. Ah well...

I was going to have a look but was too lazy! Thanks IGI. I'm sure I'd read the 'new Spanish navy looking down at the old Spanish navy' line before...

Cheers Sainty. Sounds an eminently sensible purchase and I look forward to charting progress. Momentum gaining for your Proms adventure tomorrow.

A warm welcome back to the forum for Edgeley Rob. Suitably refreshed and catching up on forum posts I trust?

I've been leaving the horses alone for the past three weeks due to Prom visits and continued losses. I'm at the Proms next weekend for the VPO Bruckner 8 and will resume Pet's Picks on September 13 by which time I'm hoping my long losing run will come to an end!

Alison, the Elgar 2 is one of the very few works (DSCH 5 is another) that I can, and have, played several nights in a row so can well understand your craze for it.

Alison......my proms Trip is very much a Possible rather than probable.....but might just go for it if i get enough work done.

Sure Deano will do you proud.

like so much, the Elgar symphonies are fairly new to me.....but they are works of genius, surely.

I too have seen this before, but it's well worth posting again. Thanks Caliban. I've just spent a couple of hours trying to get a new printer to work properly. This culminated in a call to my ISP, so I can certainly relate to these Scots. All is now well, however, and the mangertonian threat level has gone back to "Have another G & T then it'll be time for bed".
